Gombrich was more or less successful in his writing career. He wrote many admirable books however I’d like to list only the top five of his artwork. One of his main books that was considerably famous was The Story of Art, which was published in 1950 as …show more content…
Because of that he received many awards and honors. A few of these awards were the Erasmus Prize in 1975, the Hegel Prize in 1976, Balzan Prize in 1985, Ludwig Wittgenstein Prize in 1988 and Goethe Prize in 1994.
A Little History of the World is a novel, which was written in 1985 and was first Translated into English in 2005. The book is about the history of the world. It tells us the main ideas and events that took place since the Earth was born. Several main events that I think are more or less important are the creation of the Alphabet, Buddha and his peace, the Renaissance and the creation of the printing press.
The first event that I think made a huge impact on the world is the creation of the Alphabet. I think that this event is a particularly important creation. The Phoenicians first invented the Alphabet. The Alphabet consisted of 26 ‘simple’ letters. The Alphabet was simple, compared to the Egyptian hieroglyphics, which was the first writing style. The Phoenicians are Merchants, which tend to write a lot. They had to write legitimately much as the result of writing songs and stories, but also due to the far travel for business and trade. However it still didn’t impress me. My overall thoughts on this book are fairly poor. I didn’t enjoy reading the book at all. I think the book was more or less a monotonous book. I think that this book is written in a mediocre language, however the style of the book is unusual. The author intended to write a teenage novel, but I think it’s more common that adults are interested in books that contain historic topics like that. I don’t mean that teenagers are not interested in historic books or historic topics, however this book isn’t a common historic novel. I think that Gombrich tried to make his audience more interested by adding questions to the text, however in my opinion it was a poor idea. In conclusion I think that Gombrich tried too strongly to put many important facts that changed the world in a way into the book. He wanted to squeeze millions of years in a 284-page book, but it didn’t work out well. I think that it’s a fairly tough job to write the actual history of the world in such a short book and at the same time to make it interesting. Not many people have such a talent to be able to finish such a task with success and I think that Gombrich doesn’t have the talent to not fail in such a
