Analysis Of Five Women Wearing The Same Dress By Alan Ball
Alan Ball’s play “five women wearing the same dress” by is a realistic tragic-comedy. It is said to have its setting in Knoxville, Tennessee. It takes place during a newly married couple's over-perfected wedding reception. Five odd bridesmaids found themselves hiding together in an upstairs bedroom, trying to escape the wedding reception. The bridesmaid realized that despite their differences, they all have so much in common with each other, including their dislike for the bride. Alan’s play has a mixing of everything; comedy, tragedy, romance and thriller. He used these genres to enhance, clarify and support his plot for the play.
The major conflict in this paly centers around Tommy Valentine. A ruggedly handsome man who at some point in time have been with all the bridesmaid.

Frances the religious bridesmaid was jealous of all her cousin Meredith’s jewelry and Tracy’s fancy and over prized wedding reception. Trisha slept with quite a lot of men and tried to do the same with Trip, the only male character present in the play. Georgeanne had an some seasonal affair with Tommy Valentine, she mentioned that one of their encounter was by a trash bin and any time she thinks or smell the gross stench of trash she lust after Tommy Valentine. Each theme gave the play different points of view and could be appreciated by any audience.
After I was able to list out all the theme I thought stood out in the play. I tried singling out a central theme for this thought provoking play but I just couldn’t. But If I may, I would say the main idea of this play is that no matter what generation or century we are in, we are still going to face challenges, just like the five bridesmaids. It may and may not be similar to the play, but we will surely struggle with something. We can overcome them when we have the right set of people by our sides. It may not be your close friends or family, but be reassured that help will always be there to those who need
