Analysis Of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis
In “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, the style enhances the nightmarish quality of the work. The text states, “It took just as much effort to get back to where he had been earlier, but when he lay there sighing, and was once more watching his legs as they struggled against each other even harder than before, it that was possible, he could think of no way of bringing peace and order to this chaos,” (Kafka 12). This is interesting because the situation that Gregor is in is extremely scary and unusual, and the calm language used makes the event seem like a normal occurrence. Although one would think that Kafka would use chilling and disturbing language to describe these events, that is not what he did. The emotionless tone of the story confuses

Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” is a nightmarish tale with a very straightforward, matter-of-fact style, and this style enhances its nightmarish quality. An example of this is found in paragraph, which states, “His many legs, pitifully thin when compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked.” When describing this scene, the narrator definitely uses illustrative words, but does not have the disgusted tone one would expect from a story like this. The narrator speaks in an emptier way, which helps magnify the eerie feeling of the work. Both it and Gregor act very removed from the events, not how a normal human would react. Another instance of this is, “So then he tried to get the top part of his body out of bed…

In “The Metamorphosis” By Franz Kafka, the style enhances the nightmarish quality of the work in many ways. This quote from line 304-306 can be used to illustrate this when Gregor says, “I’ll open up immediately, just a moment. I’m slightly unwell, an attack of dizziness. I haven’t been able to get up.” These lines from the text show that Kafka describes this nightmare in a simple style. Gregor has completely transformed from a human into a vermin yet he treats the situation as if it could happen to anyone, and he still attempts to complete his normal responsibilities. Gregor thinks his transformation is simply a cold, and Kafka describes it very blankly, leaving it open to interpretation by the reader which in turn shows how horrifying the…

The straightforward style of The Metamorphosis gives the story a nightmarish quality. Throughout the chapter, he struggles with the task of getting out of bed as an unidentified bug. In chapter 1 paragraph 14, it reads, “Should he really call for help though, even apart from the fact that all the doors were locked? Despite all the difficulty he was in, he could not suppress a smile at this thought” (ch1 paragraph 14). Gregor is in a serious situation, but his alarming new appearance doesn’t seem to faze him at all. His startlingly calm reaction to this bizarre situation gives the reader the sense that Gregor is emotionally detached. Gregor’s reaction is opposite of how we think he should reacted, he smiles instead of panicking. The strangeness…

Everyone knows what an outsider is; most people even know an outsider. Are they really an outsider or are they just misjudged and misunderstood? First of all, Outsiders can be misunderstood which causes them to not belong. One example of this is Gregor Samsa in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Gregor is transformed into a bug. Due to his recent transformation, Gregor’s family could no longer understand him and “[his voice] was clearly and unmistakably his earlier voice, but in it was intermingled, as if from below, an irrepressible painful squeaking which left the words positively distinct only in the first moment and distorted them in the reverberation ...he made an effort with the most careful articulation and by inserting long pauses between…

In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, the straightforward style enhances the nightmarish quality of the work. At the beginning of the story it starts off with, “One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.” The story immediately starts off by having the main character turned into a roach without any warning. Since there is no tension leading up to Gregor being turned into a roach it makes the reader wonder what just happened. The part that makes it so chilling is that the tone is very nonchalant despite the fact the main character has just awoke and found himself no longer human. Another example that shows how the writing boosts the nightmarish quality is when…

In the novel "The Metamorphosis," Franz Kafka uses the distortion of turning the main character into a "monstrous vermin" to highlight the already existing distortion that is his relationship with his family. The story starts off with Gregor waking up and finding himself changed from human form into a grotesque creature. One would surely expect this would evoke a mixture of powerful emotions, however, in Gregors case, it's more of a casual inconvenience. "How about going to sleep for a few minutes and forgetting all this nonsense." His referral to the situation as "nonsense" captures his lack of concern for the matter. In an even more impractical response, his family is filled with fear and shame rather than worry and shock. Before realizing…

The works of literature Metamorphous by Kafka and the Diary of a mad man by Lu Xun both explore topics of savagery and reality. The structures of these two readings were completely different as diary of a mad man was structured as a short story with daily journal entries. The diary described the transformation of Madman's thoughts from day to day. Metamorphous is based on a first person narrative of traveling salesmen that also explores the topics of savagery and reality through Gregor's transformation of becoming an insect. Reality in the two readings are consistently questioned through the reading as Kafka and Lu Xun failed to provide a full explanation of the characters. The questioning of reality of the reader in these two readings forces the reader to visualize and find secondary…

Although a clear understanding of Kafka as a man is beneficial and ultimately necessary for the literary analysis of “The Metamorphosis”, Kafka wrote it with out the knowledge that one day his words would be interpreted on a level beyond the intelligence of the commonly educated man or woman. This fact allows anyone to enter the world of Gregor Samsa completely blind to the forensics behind the story, and still be able to proceed with out restraint (Gray 86). “The Metamorphosis” is fueled with compassion, and built on the basic aspects of life that cause pain and incite fear in humans; change, rejection, paralysis (which is technically the loss of control of one’s self), failure, loneliness, and death.…

Written in 1915, Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis has led to a plethora of academic discussion derived from both the metaphorical and literal meanings of the story. One of the most prominent ideas displayed in Kafka’s work is the focus on alienation, societal norms, and how they are skewed, and dehumanization. Kafka takes the last idea to an extreme, paranormal even, as he transforms his main character, Gregor Samsa, into a giant insect. This take on magical realism helps to aid in the idea that the constructs of alienation and dehumanization go hand in hand.…

Without the tone The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka wouldn't leave as an impacting effect on the reader. The Metamorphosis falls under the category of Magical Realism, “A fiction genre in which magical elements blend to create a realistic atmosphere that accesses a deeper understanding of reality”(Goodreads). The story follows a drastic transformation with everything that happens after a response and the author utilizes the tone of nonchalant to give the reader insight to how alienated Kafka himself felt in his own life and contribute more meaning to his character Gregor and the metamorphosis of his sister.…
