Beowulf overestimated his warrior’s morals and fighting spirit as he showered them with gifts and made them more loyal to gold then to the battle and their nation. War loomed over the Geats as it had before Beowulf became King as “With Hygelac dead, [the queen] had no belief in her son’s ability to defend their homeland against foreign invaders.” (Anonymous 2370 – 2372). The Geats however became consumed with gold as Beowulf held a firm belief that Gold not Bravery were the true measures of The Geats great accomplishments leading up to Beowulf’s ultimate death which left his people vulnerable to warfare. “A Geat woman too sang out in grief … her nation invaded, enemies on the rampage, and bodies in piles, slavery and abasement.” (Anonymous 3150 –…

Beowulf is also able to demonstrate his leadership qualities in his older days in Geatland. Following the death of Hygelac rises an important transitional moment for Beowulf. Instead of rushing to the throne he steps back and supports Hygelac son, the rightful heir. With this gesture of gratitude and respect of the throne, he proves himself worthy of kingship. In this part of his life, Beowulf must now base his decisions on the good of the people, rather then for his own glory, differ from his days as a heroic warrior. An example of this is when Beowulf decides to kill the dragon that had just mercilessly burned the Geats home’s and lands. Beowulf and his Thanes set out to kill the Dragon. Upon seeing it, the Thanes immediately flee, leaving only Wiglaf to battle at Beowulf’s side. This proves that Beowulf is still a courages warrior and a rightful leader, willing to risk his life to protect his people.…

The surrounding reality interests him, and he believes that a man is the only related entity. The main feature of the people he discovered at the very first meeting and at that moment he realized that was dealing with “no dull mechanical bull but with thinking creatures, pattern makers, the most dangerous things I’d ever met” (Gardner 27). Grendel carefully and open-mindedly watches over people's lives, but his attitude towards them remains ironic, but he treats himself the same way. Only some people, in particular, to the old King Hrothgar, bring out respect and compassion; few were able to have his admiration. Among them, the blind storyteller and Valteov, the wife of…

In the novel, humans are not as valued as animals. People are willing to kill other people, just for hurting other animals. “When Tirian knew that the Horse was one of his own Narnians, there came over him and over Jewel such a rage that they did not know what they were doing. The King’s sword went up, the Unicorn’s horn went down…Next moment both the Calormenes lay dead” (27). In my life, humans are valued above animals. If you hurt an animal, you will not get in trouble, you definitely will not be killed.…

There is a human element in Beowulf that transcends time. It is a portrayal of emotions common to the human experience of life that allow Beowulf to evoke a response from all. The human element within the epic story of Beowulf is characterized by Hrothgar. Hrothgar is the most human character in the poem. He is the person with whom we can most easily identify. By not being afraid to hide his emotions in a society where it is a sign of weakness for a man to show his feelings, gives him perhaps not a heroic quality of his own , but a quality nonetheless – the quality of human nature.…
