Facebook it is a great place filled with “nice” people and angsty teenagers yet somehow this amazing place of happiness has on some few occasions made people unhappy. The article How Facebook Makes Us Unhappy by Maria Konnikova, is about the ways that a person’s interactions on Facebook can cause them them to be more happy or unhappy. It does seem likely that how a person’s interactions on Facebook could affect their happiness. All people want to be liked and if someone uses Facebook hoping to get new friends and are not met with the response they hoped for naturally they are going to be disappointed. Libby Copeland on Slate’s article is asking a question “Is Facebook Making Us Sad?” In this article Copeland is providing her audience with relevant data about why in her opinion Facebook is making us sad and not happier in general. Copeland is trying to explain to us about the psychological side effects that social media not just Facebook has on people. With seeing our friends “perfect lives” we tend to have negative thoughts about our own lives and tend to see ourselves as the losers in life. Copeland explains her argument in an informative and persuasive tone, but more of a cause and effect style.…

In “Is Facebook Making You Mean?” an article by Lauren Tarshis, the author questions whether the negative characteristics of Facebook on children actually outweighs the positive aspects of social media. The author writes using different styles to both emphasize the important information and also to hold the interest of the intended audience. She begins by telling the story of a young girl named Anna who didn’t think through the words that she commented on another girl’s Facebook post and though not intentionally malicious, deeply hurt the receiver of those words. Tarshis immediately recognizes the opposition as she goes on to discuss the impact of those words not only in Anna’s case but also in the hundreds of similar scenarios that happen nearly every day. She then continues with the topic as she discusses both the positive and negative impact that Facebook has on the younger generation. Finally, Tarshis presents her own personal argument showing that social media can actually be extremely beneficial, especially to those who might have trouble being social in the physical world. She also recognizes the need for and…

Facebook users have slightly lower levels of “social loneliness” (66) but significantly higher levels of family loneliness. Moira Burke, a recent graduate of Human-Computer Institute at Carnegie Mellon, has stated that personalized messaged, or “composed communication”, is more satisfying than “one-click communication” (66), just a like or such on a post. Also, people who receive composed communication have found to be less lonely. The only thing better is a private Facebook message in a semi-public conversation where one pays little mind to the people possibly viewing it as well. When one looks on Facebook and sees people posting on their “perfect and “fun” lives, “passive consumption” (66), it may cause some people to feel worse about themselves and get a feeling of…

After reading Marche’s article, I was confused because I disagree with his opinion of Facebook. Marche suggests that Facebook is making people lonely, but I believe that Marche’s correlation between Facebook and loneliness is mere speculation. Marche begs the question “Does the internet make people lonely or are lonely people more attracted to the internet?” (278) I agree with the Australian study “Who Uses Facebook?” The study concludes, “People who have unhappy family relationships in the first place seek companionship through other means, including Facebook.” (279)…

In order to understand this article , the key term "friend" must be understood. There are many varying definitions of "friend" but Dailey ultimately defines "Facebook friend" as being people who you interact with most frequent. This definition is supported by Rebecca G. Adams, a professor of sciology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Adams states that "friends" are not as voluntarily as they seem but rather is restricted by education, age, and background (203). Like the definition of "friend", Dailey's assertions are supported with sufficient and convincing evidence from research and studies conducted from graduate work and research from students or professors at distinguished universities. Dailey provides many logical appeals in her argument. A common logo Dailey used was the "better and worse"(140) logo presented in her argument that "because happiness spreads…

Rather than enhancing well-being…it may undermine it” (729). We constantly refreshing the Facebook feed to see the latest status and events of our friends. When we see there is an event that our friends hanging out with each other, we felt left out and lonely. When we post a picture, we want more like to perceive popularity. As we see friends’ pictures of “the vision of good life” (648), we compared ourselves and felt bad. Although Facebook helps everyone to connect with people and share information (650), the quality of social connection that we needed is undermined. We should have more direct social interaction to fill our life with truly jolly and true-friendly, instead of with “falsely jolly, fake-friendly…” (652) online. The emotions associated with Facebook may be the only way distinguish a “person” and the “database”…

In ‘Facebook is killing communication,’ Victor Visage claims that Facebook hinders people’s ability to develop communication skills. He says this for the following reasons. It erodes face to face communication skills, it promotes poor communication and friendships, and it also leads to shallow relationships. This essay will try to show that Victor Visage is wrong because it opens up worldwide communication, it enables you to make new friends, and it allows you to build strong connections with people all across the world.…

    Facebook -Low Self Esteem

Facebook was originally made so people could strengthen their relationships by communicating with their friends even if they were far away. Recently, studies have shown that people with low self-esteem have been updating negative statuses, leaving awful comments on their friend’s pictures, and writing terrible things on their walls for everyone to see. People with low self-esteem are more likely to like Facebook because it gives them the opportunity to confront someone without coming face to face with them. They would rather say the rudest things to them on Facebook rather than in person. People with a high self-esteem who post positive things on Facebook are liked better than people who post negative things. People write their negative comments on Facebook because when they say it out loud, they can tell that other people get tired of hearing it. When you use Facebook, you don’t usually see their reactions.…

When you live most of your life through social media you begin to have a feeling of alone and loneliness. This happens because of your lack human communication. Instead of speaking with people in person you mainly talk through internet access. When this access is not available the feeling of being alone takes over your body most of the time especially if you have no close family by. Also studies have shown that the more lonely a person is, the more time they’ll likely spend more time on Facebook trying to find online friendships or relationships. In “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely” by Stephen Marche, Marche says…

Unfortunately, in this day of age, we as a society have become far too dependent on technology and social media. Just taking a moment to look around yourself you can’t help but see so many people either swiping away on their phones or mindlessly lending over towards their computers. However, you can’t help but ask what are they doing? More than likely everyone was on one of the many social media platforms. In the article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” the author argues that Facebook, one of the most popular forms of social media ever, is the reason why much of society is the way it is. For example, there used to be a point in time, where friends and families remembered each other’s birthdays and would mail you a birthday card, offer to take…
