Analysis of Importance of Being Earnest
My topic of discussion is the humor and irony that is used in the play The Importance of Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde. In the play the comedy and dramatic irony used made the plot and material engaging. By giving a description of comedy and dramatic irony, it is hopeful that you can see and understand why I felt his writing provided the characteristics of both in my analysis. The puns and paradox that were used created the comedic aspect within the play and the dramatic irony which was shown in many parts of his play will be discussed in detail. The comedic style used throughout the play in The Importance of Being Earnest written by Oscar Wilde made it intriguing.
The dramatic irony that is used within the play sets the mood for the play. The way the actions and words of the characters form the plot of the play, results in the reader being able to have knowledge about the characters. Wildes’ use of puns and paradox gives the play a comedic style that allows the reader to be able to become engaged in the play. The way Wilde uses realistic situations and adds his wit and humor to the play keeps it interesting.
It seems that Gwendolyn and Cecily could care less about the love that comes with a marriage but they are more concerned with the name of the person, this displays an essence of dark humor to me. Because the whole intent on getting married is to marry the one you fall in love not to marry because of the person name. Algernon also has a skewed view of what marriage is, he feels that marriage is more or less is a business arrangement and that divorce is more heavenly than marriage itself. Both of these views contradict the mean of marriage.
The witty puns and dramatic irony that was displayed gave the play intrigue and you wanted to keep reading it. Jack who was really Earnest, but wasn’t aware of this until the end of his story was an interesting character. He thought the prestige that came with the name would make him appear different to the
