Bernal Diaz de Castillo wrote about a quest that he was fortunate enough to participate with his soldier leader, Hernan Cortes. Hernan Cortes and his soldiers went on many different expeditions in order to expand their knowledge on the unknown world. Bernal Diaz de Castillo did not hold any type of leadership within his community; however, he was intelligent enough to know a new world apart from an old one. The New Spain that Castillo and his conquest mates experienced eventually led to the publication of his memoirs and witnessing experience.…

In 1879 a 20-year-old man named Sir Henry Mill Pellatt became locally known for beating the amateur world record for running of the mile. This fueled the ambition and aspiration for success that he seemed to have been born with. Little did he know that in just over 20 years he would own the largest private home in North America. By the time he was thirty Sir Henry owned 21 companies. His newfound money and love of art that came from visits to Europe brought the idea of Casa Loma, a Gothic/Medieval style mansion that overlooks Toronto. It took 3 years to build and yet was only lived in for 10 years. However, it is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in Toronto and the perfect setting for weddings and events as well as movie and TV productions. After looking at the it’s history, character and physical features, Casa Loma’s “sense of place” can be easily defined as romantic, beautiful and a little bit tragic.…
Ignacio Jose de Allende y Unzaga is best recognized as a Mexican-born officer who joined the Spanish army and fought for independence. Ignacio Allende was born in January 21, 1760 in San Miguel el Grande where his service years in the military were 1802-1811. The town is now called San Miguel de Allende in his honor. Allende was raised by a wealthy Spanish criollo family and soon after had the privilege to fight alongside the “Father of Mexican Independence,” Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla which at the beginning succeeded in their attempt to win independence but some differences were encounter and were executed later on in June and July of 1811. As I read chapters one and two of the novel Esperanza Rising, I felt nervous and sad because Esperanza’s father is murdered in the first chapter. The author builds tension by foreshadows this event throughout the entire chapter. Therefore, I felt uneasy the whole time knowing something awful was about to happen. Esperanza pricks her finger on a “vicious thorn” which she calls bad luck. This foreshadows that something terrible will happen to her. Therefore, when her father is tragically murdered, this does not seem coincidental, especially after she says that her father never disappointed her.…
“The Way” is one of the most inspirational movies I have ever witnessed. It centers around a man, his son, and their journey along the Camino de Santiago. Tom, an esteemed Doctor, learns that his son has passed away in a storm while traveling along the Camino de Santiago. The movie shows scenes of the father-son relationship between Tom, and his son and it quickly becomes clear that the two did not always see eye-to-eye. Tom learns that his son has passed away, and immediately travels to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to gather the remains of his son. Upon his arrival, he soon decides that he has some unfinished business to complete. Rather than go home, and continue to live an unsatisfying life, he decides to make the journey along the Camino in order to honor his son’s aspiration to travel this historic pilgrimage. In the beginning, Tom is simply going on the Journey for his son’s sake, but as the journey progressed, it becomes clear that everyone has his or her own reason to travel the Camino. Along the journey, Tom meets a few interesting people, and soon creates an everlasting bond with them. The group comes across many obstacles and hardships along the way but eventually reach the end of the Camino. Near the end of the movie, it is…
Most of the beginning of American history seems like a race of conquest between the Spaniards and Europeans with Native Americans caught in the crossfire. A seemingly peaceful group of people, the Native Americans were under constant attack from the moment settlers arrived into their territory. Historians can pull from first-hand accounts and primary sources to piece together the history of this nation. One Spainard exploratory mission wrecked off the coast of Florida with about 400 men (OTP S1-6, OTP 22). After long battles and shipwrecks, the expedition was cut short and only four men survived, one an African slave and Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca. De Vaca wrote a narrative explaining his encounters with Native Americans who had never seen white or black people before. De Vaca described the Indians as “war like people…and protect themselves from their enemies as they would have if they had been raised in Italy and in continuous war” (OTP S1-6). He explains in his narrative…
Victor is a boy who is continuously embarrassing himself in order to gain a girl's admiration. For example, in the story, Victor’s emotions over Teresa are growing bigger and bigger and have started to embarrass him even more. One example from the text that proves that Victor is embarrassing himself because he likes Teresa is, “Yes, now somebody give me an example of a person—you, Victor Rodriguez.” “Teresa,” Victor said automatically. Some of the girls giggled. They knew he had a crush on Teresa. He felt himself blushing again.” (para. 10) This quote means that Victor is thinking about Teresa which leads back to having a crush on her. Also, I can infer that the girls that were looking at Victor were giggling and going to tell Teresa. Furthermore,…
of Marlos, Spain. The story that I am about to tell you is one that I truly wish I could forget, as if it never happened to me. I relive the terror of it in my dreams every night. I was traveling through the wilderness on a trail on the foggy and stormy evening of October the 13th, 1867. My horse, Miles, trampled fiercely through the rushing wind and rain that soaked both my hat and my fur coats. The brown in them both became much darker due to the absorbing of moisture. Drips of water rushed down my chilled face as Miles ran and the lighting struck with a loud rumble of thunder following. I had not eaten in nearly two days due to the long ride. I felt fatigue and hunger coursing through my stomach and my arms and legs, almost as if I could…
“No matter how difficult life gets you should never under any circumstances attempt to kill yourself.” These were the words my older brother, Mario said to me when I was sixteen years old. At this age, I felt like Luis Mercado, everything was changing for me. At the time my classes were difficult for me, I wasn't fitting in anywhere, I was always extremely sad inside and I didn’t feel like I had a place in this world. FACT: High School was nothing like High School Musical. Though I never attempted suicide, I did have thoughts of doing it, these thoughts lingered in my head for about two in a half years. I felt alone, like Luis I dressed differently, but acted “normal.” I was the same Tatiana as always. Many teachers did not notice this change because I didnt show such symptoms like Luis did. Luis Mercado and many other children who are suicidal show signs of sadness, signs of them no longer caring and of course cuts on their wrists.…
