“Stand on the shoulders of giants”, a New-Platonist phrase taken by Google´s Scholar Browser as its motto, however, its meaning goes beyond that. The colossal company still has much more to give.
Wherefore
Computer scientist, co-founder and CEO of the world’s largest technology company specialized in Internet-related services and products, Lawrence “Larry” Page is a synonym for success in life. Since Google has become a worldwide and huge company, the tasks for its development are obviously too many. Page, alongside with Sergei Brin, have hired an average of 47,756 employees that make specific tasks for the development of the company. From this number, more than 10,000 are software developers who are making constant upgrades for the customers to give them better services. But, besides hiring them, they also provide them a good treatment; one good and comical example is that in Google there exists a tradition of creating April Fool’s Day jokes and, with this, the employees enjoy their work and the results of the company are better.
Businessman’s characteristic
The most important characteristic of Lawrence Page is definitely designing strategies for long-term benefits, as he says: “When deciding whether Google should spend millions or even billions of dollars in acquiring a new company, is it something you will use once or twice a day, and does it make your life better?”
This strategy rejects outdated measures of valuing a corporation similarly to revenue. Alternately, merge and acquisition companies (M&A) should seek for usefulness over profitability, and long-term potential over short-term financial gain. One example of this practice, was the purchasing of Nest, the home automation company. Whereas Nest´s income seems minuscule, the deal opened the doors for Google to a brand-new market.
