The sniper takes risks throughout the short story. One of the risks he takes is lighting the cigarette. He knows what would happen if he does, it will give away his cover. Knowing
what would happen if he risks a smoke shows that he is experienced. “He paused...considering whether he should risk a smoke...there were enemies watching. He decided to take the risk” (2), the quote shows how the sniper is experienced and he knows what would happen if he takes the risk he knows what is worth doing and what isn't like risking a smoke.
Deaths affect people they change the kind of person they are, this is shown in the sniper. The sniper feels remorse after killing the other sniper since he killed his own brother. The sniper quit and started cursing everything war himself and everybody. ‘The lust of battle died with him. He became bitten by remorse… the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face’(20&26).This quote shows how war can change people and how death can affect a person and make them think differently. To sum it all up. In the sniper by Liam O'Flaherty we see a teenage sniper take risks. O’Flaherty also shows how the sniper has to face many deaths caused by him and one will affect him the most. And these deaths will change his view on the war making him quit and curse everything like the war, himself, and everyone else. Because when you lose a loved one you lose part of your soul. There is a possibility that anyone in war can kill their family member and not know until they see their dead body lying there, whether it be on the battlefield or just a little dispute.
