KINETIC, THERMODYNAMIC AND ISOTHERM STUDIES ON THE REMOVAL OF MALACHITE GREEN DYE FROM WASTEWATER USING ALPC.

ABSTRACT:
The aim of the present work is to investigate the quantity of removal of Malachite Green dye from aqueous solution using Activated Los Pantanos De Villa Carbon (ALPC). Generally, dyes are used in chemical, textile, paper, printing, leather, plastics and food industries. The need for the treatment of dye contaminated waste water passed out from the industry. In this study, Los Pantanos De Villa Carbon was studied for its potential use as an adsorbent for removal of Malachite Green dye. This study is focusing on various

It was dried, charred with excess quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid keeping at 120oC for 10 hours. Then the resultant carbon was washed with excess quantity of distilled water and dried at 110oC for 1 hour and the material obtained was soaked in 5% sodium bicarbonate solution and allowed to stand overnight to remove any residual acid. The material was thoroughly washed with hot distilled water until washings were nearly of neutral effect. To eliminate surface groups by thermal activation, the carbonized material was activated at 600 ºC for 6 hrs in a furnace. The resulting carbons were ground in a …show more content…
The surface area of the adsorbent was determined by Quanta chrome surface area analyzer. The pH of aqueous slurry was determined by soaking 1g of biomass in 50 mL distilled water, stirred for 24 h and filtered and the final pH was measured. The physico-chemical characteristics of the adsorbent were determined using standard procedures. The equilibrium MG dye concentration was determined by using UV-VIS Spectrophotometer (Systronics, Vis double beam Spectro 1203). For stirring purpose magnetic stirrer was used. The pH of zero-point charge or pHZPC was determined based on the previous

To identify the dyes present a sample of the beverage was tested in a spectrometer, the highest absorption rates were found to be at 503.7 nm (A=0.281) and 630.7 nm (A=0.270). This lead to the conclusion that the beverage contained red 40 and blue 1. To determine the concentration of the dyes a series of dilutions was prepared for both dyes and tested with the spectrometer. This data was converted into point graphs and a trendline was established. The slope of the trendline (y=mx) was then multiplied by the Absorbance of the associated dye to find the concentration. The final goal was to replicate the beverage using the data gathered. To accomplish this a solution was designed consisting of 15.34% red 40 and 14.12% blue…

Spectrophotometry was used in the lab to determine whether non-magnetized zeolite, magnetized zeolite, or charcoal was the more effective sequestration agent for Procion Red Dye. A calibration curve was created with the known concentrations and the absorbances of the Procion Red Dye dilutions at λmax. The slope of the calibration curve was used to determine the concentration of the analytes. As a result, charcoal was shown to be the more effective sequestration agent.…

Adsorption column chromatography is one way to separate compounds out of a mixture. In this technique, a solid stationary phase called the adsorbent is packed in a glass column and an eluent, which is the mobile phase, moves slowly through the packed column. In this experiment, an adsorption chromatography column was constructed using silica gel as the adsorbent. A 50:50 mixture of ferrocene and acetylferrocene was then separated using the eluents hexane and tert-butyl methyl ether (TBME). The less polar ferrocene was attracted to the less polar hexane, so as the hexane passed through the stationary phase, the ferrocene moved with it and the acetylferrocene was left behind. When TBME was passed through the stationary phase, the acetylferrocene moved with it because the more polar acetylferrocene was attracted to the more polar TBME. The percent recovery of ferrocene was 72.41% and the percent recovery of acetylferrocene was 82.76%.…

    Bleaching of Allura Red

Katie Berry TA: Jason Fahrion April 10, 2013 A Kinetic Study of the Bleaching of Allura Red Introduction: In this laboratory experiment, we studied the kinetics of the reaction between Allura Red (C18H14N2O8S2) and bleach. C18H14N2O8S2 (aq) + NaOCl (aq) → products Allura Red is a food dye, which is an organic molecule with alternating single and double bonds. The color of the dye comes from the delocalization of electrons in the πbonding system (Exton, 149). Bleach is an aqueous solution that contains sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The hypochlorite of bleach breaks the double bonds of the food dye through oxidation, forming molecules that do not absorb visible light and thus bleaching the product. During this process, hypochlorite is reduced to chloride and hydroxide ions. OCl (aq) + H2O (l) + 2e → Cl (aq) + 2OH (aq) Our goal in this experiment was to observe the reaction and concentration changes between Allura Red and bleach and determine the rate law for the reaction. The rate of reaction can be found by the equation rate = ∆concentration / ∆time = k[Allura Red]x[NaOCl]y The x and y values indicate the order with respect to each reactant, and k represents the rate constant for the reaction. These values had to be determined experimentally. In order to determine the rate law of the reaction, we had to use spectrophotometry in order to monitor the change in absorption of the various reactions. Since Allura Red was the only colored species in the reaction, we were able to monitor the rate by observing the decrease in color of the solution with time. From the absorption values, we were able to calculate the concentrations from Beer’s law: A=ϵBC (1). Five different trials were performed with various concentrations of Allura Red, bleach, and water. The equation: M1V1 = M2V2 (2) was used in order to calculate the initial concentrations of Allura Red and NaOCl for these trials. Graphs of concentration of Allura Red ([AR]), ln[AR], and 1/[AR], as a function of time…

To determine the rate law with respect to bleach and blue dye, a series of graphic and algebraic manipulations were done on the data obtained in the kinetic trace experiment in order to determine the different components that made up the rate law. Using absorbance spectroscopy to monitor concentration over time, rate order of the dye was found to be 1st order through the integrated rate law and through the proportionality method; the order of the bleach was also determined to be 1st order. Using this information, the rate constant was determined to be 0.408 M-1S-1, the units indicating that the reaction was a second order . Our overall rate law for the entire reaction was Rate =.408[dye][bleach].…

Water pollution from batik industry is a serious problem owing to the toxicity effect of wax, resin, sodium silicate and various types of dyes. Economical and efficient treatments are necessary for batik wastewater before it is discharged out. While treatment of dyes and chemicals are already available such as adsorption and membrane, it is observed that the presence of wax and resin can hinder the efficiency of dye removal using conventional technique. A study was initiated for the recovery of wax and resin using a baffle tank, a reboiling technique, then further by adding up of hydrochloric acid (HCL) and acetic acid after first boiling of wastewater. The efficiency of removal was studied using single and combined dyes. Studies on the effect of temperature, pH, cooling time, and acid added were done to determine the optimum efficiency on wax removal of both baffle tank and reboiling technique. From the study, it was found that treatment of batik wastewater using reboiling technique, after the 4th boil, give highest amount of wax and resin removal compared to the baffle tank and reboiling technique added with acid. However, the time needed for the wax to cool off in the baffle tank is shorter than of the reboiling technique. As short period of time was taken to treat the wastewater, it is timesaving as well as economical for the batik industry. Addition of acid to the reboiling technique, besides showing least efficiency, is costly for the batik wastewater treatment. As a conclusion, it can be said that the removal of wax using baffle tank technique proves to be the most efficient method of wax removal due to the time saving virtue. However, because of the cost needed to fund a baffle tank, the stated method comes with certain reservations.…
