She doesn’t know that the Cunningham’s don’t take anything they couldn’t pay back so it seemed as though she got offended when Walter didn’t take the quarter. Everyone in the class knows what the Cunningham’s are like so when this happens, the class reacted surprised. Mrs. Fisher did not show an act of false judgement which shows that things change in Maycomb. Over time, people begin to look at different situations a bias way due to the perspectives of others. She also doesn’t like the fact that Scout can read. It seems as though she was discouraged by a child’s knowledge and didn’t know how to react towards it. “Jem and I hated her. Tom shows maturity towards Becky when they are trapped in the cave. Tom and Becky are stranded in the cave and are starting to lose hope in finding civilization again. They envy all of the things they had taken for granted such as their beds and all the food they had. Many conflicts take place on the first day of school which lead to her understanding of race, skin and wealth are all equal. Everybody has had enough of her attitude including her teacher, Mrs. Caroline, who said "Jean Louise, I've had about enough of you this morning." (Lee21) On the first day of school, Jean goes through many struggles with the characters including with one of the Cunningham's, Walter. Walter comes from a poor family, as most of the people in Maycomb, and he does not have enough money for lunch one day. Walter Cunningham was a kind boy who was the same age as Scout but was underprivileged and not very wealthy. Walter and Scout became friends so, Scout invited him to dinner a few times before Aunt Alexandra tells Scout not to invite him anymore. Aunt Alexandra exclaims “‘I’ll tell you why, because he is trash, that’s why you can't play with him. I’ll not have you around him picking up his habits and learning Lord knows what.
