Analysis Of Miss Emily Grierson In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily

In William Faulkner’s short story, “A Rose for Emily,” the main character, Miss Emily Grierson, is met by the societal pressures of the 19th century. It is clear to see from the text that Miss Emily is a victim of the values her town tries to preserve. Miss Emily’s town is constantly expecting something from her and judging her for tiny aspects of her life. In the beginning of the short story there is a sense that Miss Emily isn’t welcome in the town when stated that she was, “a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town.” Once a smell develops in the house Miss Emily resides in, the townspeople start to instigate and complain.
