In the article, Mr. Clarkson’s racist and assertive tone infuriates me. He indicated that “up to 600 million Chinese people believe that tigers can cure many ailments.” I am conscious that there are such medicines sold in various areas around the world and are popular in China. He writes, “we lost most of the men in Europe”, confirming that Mr. Clarkson has a Eurocentric perspective; he cares more about the people who have died in the war. However, tigers should be treated equitably to humans. Without tigers our food chain will change massively due to the imbalance of the number of animals in the wild, which will soon affect the food distribution. Additionally, he has said that an extinction of tigers “ is as irrelevant as the death of a faraway star” which again states his lack of care towards tigers. The adjective “faraway” states his assumption and that he has no concern about tigers. This clearly suggests that Mr. Clarkson is ignoring so-called “eco mentalists”, a term which I find truly offensive, with its connotations of lunacy and idiocy. It seems a waste to spend money on zoos; this money would be better spent supporting the ‘eco-mentalists’ protect natural habitats. I acknowledge that he uses rhetoric to question the reader and make it more engaging; however his resonance shows a lack of care towards education for children. This once more proven when he states: “I have never seen a duck billed platypus in the wild or a rattlesnake.” Just because he does not value this experience does not mean others do not and seeing animals can improve children’s empathy and understanding, which is essential for their development.
