This woman Maru Mori gives these socks to him which is valuable just because she had made them for him herself. Just like in “Advice to My Son”, this father values the life of his child and wants nothing but the best for him just like any other parent would. He gives his son this valuable advice and I’m sure it means something to the father who is writing it and to the son who receives it. It is valuable advice as well. These readings teach you to love the same things in life, like the boy in “Ode to My Socks” love these little socks and the father in “Advice to My Son” tells his boy to appreciate the little things, such as bread and wine.…

The poet also uses imagery such as ‘lakes and ‘swans’, to symbolise the peacefulness, and also to symbolise love. You notice words that show the subject is not alone, with ‘we’ and ‘our’. These words and also the motion of the swans, the lake, and the peacefulness are foreshadowing that the poem will take a turning onto love that is more literate. However I don’t think that the poems theme is so much about love in particular, but about a natural love, a natural pull that brings two people together even after hard times.…

Two specific techniques are used to convey the idea of how the woman in the poem feels about her husband and how she expresses her feelings. These two techniques are rhyming and repetition. The use of rhyming gives the poem a flow to go by. Every last word of a line rhymes with the following last word to create a greater effect of what is being tried to say. The rhymed words give the poem an accent helping to capture the romanticism of the poem. Repetition is seen in the first three lines of the poem when the speaker says, "If ever." The use of these words over and over again show how the speaker feels that it is near impossible to find another love such as the one she has at the moment. These two techniques give the poem an atmosphere of true love and compassion.…

In Wild Oats, love is conveyed in a similar fashion. It explains that a person, over the course of time, comes to realise that his greatest desires of love, are unattainable, and second best things will have to suffice. The central purpose of this poem is to show that love is one of these great desires and despite flashes of promise it contains scarcely anything that is more than fragmentary. Larkin reveals, through tone, diction,…

This poem can make the reader believe that love can happen for anyone. It shouldn’t matter if a person is not a good driver, for example, “Unpredictable dear, the taxi drivers’ terror, Shrinking from far headlights pale as a dime Yet leaping before red apoplectic streetcars – Misfit in any space. And never on time. ” is an example of her poor driving skills. Their happiness is what matters, for instance, “Forgetting your coffee spreading on our flannel, Your lipstick grinning on our coat, So gaily in love’s unbreakable heaven Our souls on glory of spilt bourbon float.” This shows that her happiness is important. In using these two stanzas (3 & 5) readers can imagine the kind of love they share and want that for themselves. Readers of this poem would believe that the poet, John Frederick Nims, is truly a romantic at heart. For example, in the last stanza (6), he wrote, “Be with me, darling, early and late. Smash glasses – I will study wry music for your sake. For should your hands drop white and empty, All the toys of the world would break.” is written by someone who has experienced heartache. The mood and tone of this poem is light-hearted and romantic.…

    Last Night vs the Embrace

Love is defined in the dictionary in many ways; just as in life, love does not hold one indefinite meaning, but an exclusive meaning to each individual. Poets throughout history have written countless poems on the topic of love. In some aspects these poems are very similar to one another but at the same time unique in their own manner. Sharon Old’s “Last Night” describes the love she encounters only for a brief moment after having sex for the first time. Whereas Mark Doty’s “The Embrace” pronounces the love he feels for his lover, when seeing him in a dream. These love poems seem to take a different path from the orthodox love poems one is used to seeing, and instead they express a side of love that is not often talked about. Both of these works represent a strong sense of symbolism that only expands the meaning that each poet is voicing.…

In the poem “Love is Not All: It Is Not Meat nor Drink” the title to Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem, there is a clear sign of bitterness in the poem that impedes and becomes a barrier towards the idea of love. However, Millay in this stanza has used several poetic methods by showing us that love is not significant in anyone's life. As we progress on with the poem, Millay indicates that although love is not as significant for one's survival, she would not at any time in her life wish to live without it. This poem focus is her personal thought that questions the transitory nature of love, its depth, and importance. When it comes to the structure of this poem, Millay utilizes the Iambic pentameter in the initial seven verses.…

Introduction: Love is often regarded as an emotion that invokes extreme joy, hope and excitement. For example, Romeo and Juliet were a young couple who were so excited and hopeful about their love that they were willing to do anything to be together. However, there is another side to the feeling we call love that isn't so joyous. The other, darker side of love is expressed by three Langston Hughes poem which show us the heart-break, the abandonment and the desperation associated with falling in love.…

What is love? This is a question that is often discussed and argued about. Everyone seems to have a different perception on what love truly is. These perceptions help categorize what type of person you are when it comes towards love. This can range from being a hopeless romantic to a person who doesn’t even believe that love exists. A perfect example of how the views of love can be drastically different can be illustrated by these two poems; “Dover Beach” and “Dover Bitch”. “Dover Beach”, was written by Matthew Arnold in the 19th century. The love Arnold speaks of in his poem is a deep love that is indestructible. “Dover Bitch” was written by Anthony Hecht, in response to “Dover Beach” and refers to love as being a joke and nonexistent. Arnold can be portrayed as being a hopeless romantic while Hecht is skeptical and a cynic when it comes to love. There are many factors which influence the authors’ literary works including: the time period, the object of love in their poem and their overall view of the world. These components as well as the tones of the of the poems help convey the author’s view point on love and its place in society.…

The word Love is a strange feeling that can be one of the most exciting things someone will ever experience. It’s a feeling of warm, personal deep affection that one has for another person or thing. In Helen Farries poem “Magic of Love” she is very straightforward about how love makes someone feel “It can comfort and bless/ it can bring happiness” (601). But in John Frederick Nim’s poem “Love Poem” he uses metaphors to talk about love and you have to pay close attention to what he is saying. The theme of these two poems is love and the opposing views of the author’s views of love.…

There are many ways of finding ideal love. There is love that can be promising with no flaws and there is love that can be impossible to fine. John Donne wrote two poems that show a negative and a positive view on love. The “Song,” by Donne talks about the struggle of love in the narrator’s life and the view of women. It is a very short poem, but has a very powerful meaning towards women, that they are dishonest and are very deceiving. It has a very negative tone and he tends to exaggerate giving examples on how women are neither true nor fair. The “Valediction,” by Donne talks about their love being so powerful that nothing can separate their love. The meaning for the poem “Valediction,” is that if someone believes love will last, then it will continue. The tone of this poem is positive and uses many metaphors to explain his true love for his wife. In the “Song” and “Valediction” have different figures of speech that are used to show each narrators view on ideal love.…
