John Berger (n.d.) once said, “That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful means that we are less alone, that we are more deeply inserted into existence than the course of a single life would leave us to believe”. Rituals leave the believer with the undeniable feeling that they are not alone in this world. The act of cleansing and charging crystals is no different. Claire (2018) also stated, “When crystals are still part of the earth they are able to drawn energy from it naturally and so this does not become a problem, they are also likely to use less energy. Once they have been taken from the earth the crystal loses this ability and so the energy must be replenished by those who use and care for them”. He prefers to cleanse and recharge his crystals alone but for the sake of this project he allowed me a glimpse into his world. I reached his house a few hours before the new moon started and early awaited a chance to observe. First, he listens to soothing music, usually the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and reflects on his time since his last cleansing. The idea is that when one recharges their crystals it absorbs the energy one gives off, so Ron likes to be in a peaceful, centered state-of-mind. Secondly, he begins meditation. After what feels like a millennium, Ron begins phase three of his ritual, the washing of his crystals. He does this by smudging them with sage which he states rids them of bad energy he may have collected during his travels. Next, he takes them outside and leaves them in the pasture overnight. Finally, in the morning he brings them inside, holds them, and shares his intention with them. Ron does this by holding each crystal and thinking positive, personal thoughts. During this ritual he cleansed and charged a quartz, amethyst and a selenite but what do these crystals symbolize? The cleansing and the charging of crystals dripped with symbolism from the time it began until the time it ended. First, the new moon symbolizes the new beginning that Ron is entering.
