Junior has become more mature throughout the story. At first, Junior feared white people and disliked them because of the way they treat the Indians differently. For an example, on page 2 says “ I had to have all ten extra teeth pulled out in one day..our white dentist think that Indians only felt half as much pain as white people did.” Junior felt that as an Indian, he had to suffer in order to receive proper health care. Back in Wellpinit, he had no confidence because he would constantly get beat up and get picked on for his unique appearance. Since he didn't had any friends, nobody would praise him or motivate him. But in Reardon, it is the opposite. People appreciate his personality and his positive attitudes. Although Junior’s appearance and race is mainly different from the others, the people does not physically harm him. All of these positive acts from the people in Reardan with his great determination makes him fearless. On page 189 says, “ You can do it, coach said. I can do it. You can do it. I can do it. Page 217 says, “ We Indians know how to celebrate with our dead. And I felt okay. In the middle of a crazy and drunk life, you have to hang on to the good and sober moments tightly.” Junior is slowly healing his emotions with his parents on Mary’s death. Junior and his family are so powerful together that they are able to heal one another and teach one another about acceptance, coping with death and overcoming the odds.
