Much like poetry, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Music and poetry are two platforms in which artists from the beginning of time have chosen to circulate their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Although different in popularity, these mediums are alike in various ways. Nonetheless, not every song you hear on the radio can be properly analyzed using procedures that you would follow to evaluate poetry. A song has to contain certain literary elements essential to poetry, such as the song “From Eden” by Hozier, in order for it to be analyzed. Hozier is recognized for his sentimental lyrics and use of poetic elements to add musicality and rhythm to his music. Through symbolism, repetition, and…
Women are powerful creatures, capable of causing change and hope in the midst of adversity. Heroines shine in the limelight, bringing attention to what is wrong and what needs to be done. However, we never hear about these women after that prominence rolls onto another. When the curtain falls to allow a new play to begin in her place; we get up from our seats and leave popcorn buckets behind, leaving her alone. Her role is done, she's left the impression upon young hearts and change will not be standing by. "Old Heroines" by Julia Alvarez is about this. Focusing on the affect a heroine has on other women, and what happens to her afterwards.…
Sappho was a woman of Ancient Greece that history sees as a mystery. Her life is a mystery because not much is known about her or her poems…
The play "Violet" takes place in the mid-1960's and focuses on a young woman in search for a miracle, and who bears a horrendous scar on her face from an accident when she was a child. The musical opens with Violet boarding a Greyhound bus that is traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she hopes to be physically healed by a famous TV preacher. On her journey of self-discovery, she meets several people, including two soldiers, who soon become her friends. As the young adults traveling advances, so does their understanding of many important lessons and choices about life and growing up. Throughout the play, Violet flashes back to her childhood memories, especially those moments with her father, whom she condemns total responsibility for the accident. Ultimately, Violet experiences a form of healing that is truly more important than the physical miracle she was searching for.…
This poem talks about people with a “discerning eye” (line 2) meaning those who are judging others being the ones who are saying what is and is not proper. “Much Madness” can be used to interpret several aspects of modern society. One of these ways being how society decides what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable behavior. This is seen a lot by people who have a psychological disorder such as Attention Deficit Hyper Active Disorder or ADHD, or anxiety and depression. ADHD is mostly seen in children yet the people with the “discerning eye” are judging the parents most harshly. The parents of the children with ADHD get told things like “maybe if you disciplined your child properly they wouldn't behave this way.” People who have…
Each Egyptian love poem and Sappho’s love poems express a similar theme but their method and imagery is quite different. The Egyptian love poems are generally lighter while Sappho’s poems are more serious. The Egyptian poem “I passed close by his house” contains the lines,” How joyfully does my heart rejoice, my beloved, since I first saw you... My heart leaps up to go forth that I may gaze on my beloved “(p.80 lines11-12, 22-23). This passage is an explanation of the internal feelings of the speaker. This, compared to Sappho’s illustrates a stark difference on a similar subject, from the Poem 31(He seems to me equal to gods that man),”…no speaking is left in me no: tongue breaks and thin fire is racing under skin and in eyes no sight and drumming fills ears and cold sweat hold me and shaking grips me all, greener than grass I am and dead- or almost I seem to me (p.639 lines 7-18) These lines by Sappho give the impression almost of pain, speechless, the thin fire that racing under skin, the blindness, the deafness from drumming. This is quite an image of being struck forcefully by the emotion of love. Compared to the Egyptian love poems which invokes a rejoicing heart and the impulse to leap up invokes quite a different image.…
Lysander says this to Helena when he is in love with her while under the potion. This quote talks about how reason is an important factor when it comes to falling in love with a person, and I think this is true for the most part. Reason comes with maturity and maturity comes with experience. I really love this quote because although there is no need for me to be thinking of true love at my age it gives me a sense of how it’s going to feel when I do fall in love in the future.…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Perhaps one of the best plays ever written by the great William Shakespeare was Macbeth. This bloodstained tale tells of the Scottish General Macbeth and the prophecy he receives from three witches. The section of prophecy that envelops Macbeths mind is “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3, 49) After hearing that he may be king the idea of sitting on the throne persists in his mind. Shakespeare presents Macbeth’s actions and feelings about the murder of Duncan through the use of soliloquy and Macbeth’s conversations with others.”…
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies is generally thought of as a romantic comedy. The play involves a number of romantic components, it is not actually a love story; it distances the audience from the emotions of the characters in order to poke fun at the torments and afflictions that those in love suffer. Factors that make the play fit into the genre are the troubles of humans and magic. This magic creates conflicts that despite the fantasy of it all are still relevant. Shakespeare uses the setting in the play to start and manipulate these conflicts. This is a light-hearted, loving, and humorous romantic comedy.…
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream deals primarily with clashing ideas about love, an oppressive patriarchy, and if love should be the basis of marriage. The play does however offer hints of a need to transform the culture of the day, and offers women a greater say in their love or lack thereof. In the third act of the play, the power women possess is truly expressed, even if it must come about due to a man’s oppression. Further investigation of this scene will bring to light the meaning behind Titania’s newfound oppressive nature, and how it contributes to the overlying issues of the play.…
