Whenever soldiers return from war, after years in service, it is often very difficult for them to adapt and function in society, in addition to that it is also hard for the environment and family to understand and give the right support to returned soldiers. This is also the case in “Soldier’s Home”.
“Soldier’s Home” is a short story written by the award winning American writer Ernest Hemingway. The story was published in 1925. It is a social and realistic short story, because it takes places in a real world, where there is nothing imaginary. The short story is set in the state of Oklahoma, in a town close to Kansas City in 1919 “…Krebs returned to his home town in Oklahoma…” (p. 2, l. 5). There is no indication …show more content…
2, l. 34-35). This sentence points out that Krebs misses the prostitutes from Europe. He does not wish to be in a relationship with an American girl because it is too complicated. He misses the simple and non-talking European prostitutes.
Krebs does not consider himself as a part of god’s kingdom “"I'm not in His Kingdom," Krebs said.”(p. 3, l. 74). This is because of the things he has done in the war. He has killed other men ”… the times so long back when he had done the one thing, the only thing for a man to do, easily and naturally..” (p. 2, l. 17-18). This is also why he has changed so much, to have killed another human being is something which have a massive effect on the personality. This is also why he feel that he cannot pray to god with his mother. Instead he lets his mother pray for him, in the hope that he will be forgiven.
Krebs tells his mother that he does not love her. Immediately the mother starts crying and he regret saying. “It wasn't any good. He couldn't tell her, he couldn't make her see it. It was silly to have said it.” (p. 4, l. 101-102). This shows exactly the problems returned soldiers are dealing with. When they are at war, they have to close down their feelings to function on the battlefield. It is not easy to open up again, when you return home after years in battle. Krebs is trying to justify his saying by telling his mother that he doesn’t love anybody, but it does not help, he then realizes that he cannot explain
