Analysis of Motherhood/Paradise Lost
In her article “Motherhood/Paradise Lost’’ Terry Martin Hekker discusses the great pleasure and sense of fulfillment that being a housewife provides; she also wrote two columnists for the New York Times argue about The Satisfactions of Housewifery and Motherhood. Her major purpose of the article is to provide a clear statement of how it is shameful to be a housewife. Hekker article provided some good points related to the housewives situation but, it’s not fully clear because the author did not present valid examples and evidences to modify her credibility to the readers. Terry Hekker article contained a variety of good points which sums up as the following. Hekker started her article saying that it is shameful to be a housewife in this century as the housewives are constantly criticized by people; her husband and her children are disgraceful to declare to people that Terry does not have a profession. The second point Terry talk about is that there are erroneous belief about the task of a housewife. Expressions like “lazy”, “unproductive”, “parasite living off a man” are used to illustrate her full time vocation. The author thinks this condition a humiliation since she considers that the benefits that can be getting from this profession are plentiful. Along with those she speaks that being there for your children and your husband and taking care of them is self-fulfilling.
