It represented something great. As the reader may note, Kezia loves the lamp in this doll house. She tells Isabel that she forgot to mention it to the other children who are surrounding their new doll house. This lamp shines yellow and holds oil. The color yellow represents happiness and brightness. Katherine Mansfield also states that Kezia is the only one who has a heart for the Kelvey’s. She is the only one who wants to invite them to see the doll’s house and wants them to be involved in all of the action on the playground. Nobody else wants to invite the Kelvey children except Kezia. Her mother even declines her invitation for the children. One could interpret that the light represents something important. The light resembles the brightness that Kezia has in her. She has a bright heart for those poor children who never get any attention from the rest of the children at the school. This story shows the reader that people may seem ugly on the outside, but most people have the light inside them that comes out sometimes. Everyone has a light that deep inside there that people often forget about. People must understand that others may not be happy at the time, but there is a light inside of them that shines bright. The Burnell children are “ugly” on the outside, but Kezia has the light that shines brighter than her sister’s. Many people overlook the light because it is not right in front of them. They must look for it to find it, and when they do, then they will appreciate it. Isabel was forgetting to show the children the beautiful and meaningful lamp in the doll’s house. When Kezia bright the attention to Isabel that she had forgotten about the lamp, she then showed all of the children the lamp. Life should be happy and people should be grateful that they have what they have. When they do have everything they need, it is always considerate to help others in need.
