Analysis of the Implication in The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a short story written by Mark Twain and takes place in the ancient mining camp of Angel's. After reading it, I am deeply impressed by the main character, Jim Smiley who loved to make bets, and always created miraculous gambling events beyond imagination. Superficially, these events sounded really funny. While connected with the social phenomena in daily life and the story's historical background, there must be something implied in the story.
The first phenomena is about the gambling of Parson Walker’s wife who laid very sick and was about dying. Luckily, after seeing the doctor, the doctor said she was considerable better. However, at this moment, Smiley turned up and said “Well, I’ll risk two-and-a-half she don’t, anyway.”
Faced with a very important moment that one may lose his or her life, Smiley dared to regard it as a common gambling and never took other’s life into consideration. From here, we can clearly see that Smiley would like to discriminate everything in the world except gambling. Even a person’s life was no far more important than the joy of gambling. By such description, the author aims to reveal America’s money worship and criticize the twisted human nature.
The second phenomena is about the gambling experience of a mare. In the text, author's description of one of Smiley's betting pets-a mare was a good exemplification to demonstrate this point. The mare was described as "so slow and always had asthma, or the distemper, or the consumption, or something of that kind", and "the boys called her the fifteen-minute nag". Generally speaking, people are seldom willing to use such a diseased horse on betting, for a strong and fast one might certainly be a more suitable selection in winning
