Analysis Of The Merchant Of Venice
Shylock : i want three thousands ducats
Bassanio: yes please, for 3 months i say
Shylock: three months? Well....
Bassanio: dont worry, Antonio will guarantee the loan. If i fail to do so, antonio will do the payment
Shylock: hmmm....hmm....
Bassanio: so tell me whats your decision?
Shylock: three thousand ducats and 3 months. Final! Antonio will guarantee it
Bassanio: your decision please?
Shylock: antonio isnt bad, i guess
Bassanio: so? Now you have it, anything to differ?
Shylock: i didnt mean it that way! Saying he isnt bad means antonio will pay me since he has the money. He has ship bound for tripoli, one to indies and one in england, and more business ventures all around the world. That is secure enough to me. But, anything can happen.

Dining with you? Oh yes! You expect me to smell pork? That pork that your Jesus has sent! You can ask me to sell or buy or talk with you. But i will never eat, pray or drink with you! Anyway, any news abt Rialto? Who's he if i may ask?
(Antonio enters)
Bassnio: this is signor Antonio
Shylock: (to himself) look at him, he looks like a man who just robbed me and now hes crawling to beg a favor! I hate him! Him as a christian just make me hate him even more! Other than that, he stupidly likes to lend money to people without interest and that explains why the interest rate is low here in Venice. If i can get a hold of him, i will certainly satisfy my old gruge. He hates Jew and he cang stop complaining abt me and claim that my hard-earned profits as "interest"! I hate him! Its an insult to jews to forgive him in life!
Bassanio: shylock, are u here?
Shylock: im having a thought of my money. As far as i know, i cant raise three thousand ducats at instant. Hiwever, Tubal is there to help me with cash. Antonio, how many months do u want? My bad signor, Hello. How are you?
Antonio: shylock, never in my life, i lend or borrow with interest. But today, i'm going to set aside that fact and help my good friend here. Does he know how much you

I actually wanted to be friends with you and forget all the bad things that's ever happened. I was planning to not charge you at all, but with this attitude, im glad that i can charge you
Bassanio: That would be very nice
Shylock: heres the deal. If you fail to pay me, your penalty will be a pound of flesh, cut, and taken out of whatever part of your body i like
Antonio: deal is on! And i would even like to add that jews are nice
Bassanio: what are you thinking? I will never let you sign a contact like that! Im better without the money!
Antonio: you dont have to worry bassanio. I expect to earn more than 3 times a month before the loan is due
Shylock: oh father Abraham if i may ask, what kind of people are these christians? Do not misunderstand me, taking a pound of flesh is so valuable that to teach these people. I would certainly stop this offer if its turned down, but if it does not, that'd be great. And i truly have no bad intention.
Antonio: whatever shylock, i'll sign the contract now.
Shylock: that's what you wish! Meet met at the notary's. I'll go get the money right away as soon as he reads the instructions for our little contract . See you soon, i need to be home first and check on my careless servants.
Antonio: Yea yea whatever my Jewish friend, hurry

Antonio and Shylock have made a deal that if Antonio does not pay back a certain sum of money by a certain day, Shylock will be allowed to cut a pound of Antonio's flesh from a place of his choice. Unfortunately for Antonio, the ships containing his possessions got wrecked at sea and he is unable to pay Shylock back in time. They meet in a court where Bassanio, Antonio’s best friend and possible love interest, offers to pay Shylock twice the sum of the original bond. Even after Bassanio offers to pay twice the amount of the bond, Shylock still refuses to show empathy. When Shylock says, “i want it” it is evident that he wasn’t considering how Antonio felt, he was only thinking about how to get what he wanted. In the end, Shylocks lack of empathy came back to bite him when he was told that he could only cut Antonio's flesh as long as he didn’t draw any blood. Since that is impossible, Shylock did not get the pound of flesh, which is what he wanted. If Shylock had empathized with Antonio and accepted Bassanios offer, he would have been better off than he was when he…

All communities run successfully with qualities of fairness and equality. The well-being of the citizens depends on the support and guidance they receive from those with power and influence in their society. When the people become corrupt and start having intentions that do not contribute back to the community, the society will fall apart and be unable to maintain balance and stability. In William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible the reader sees examples of injustice inflicted on the victims within the plays through the people with power within the community. The Christians in The Merchant of Venice mock Shylock the Jew countless times while the high court in The Crucible believe citizens are practicing witchcraft without a proper testimony. In both situations, the Christians and the court see themselves doing the right thing and believe they are contributing to the society when in reality, they break apart the community by persecuting those that are different. The victims in William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible suffer from injustice as power being placed in the wrong hands leads to the formation of biased decision, the limited free will of citizens and severe punishments.…

There’s nowhere in the text where Shylock is portrayed as the ‘good guy’. Instead, he’s equated to the devil by the Christians. Launcelot labelled Shylock as “the devil himself”; Bassanio called him “a cruel devil”; and Solanio also tagged him as “the devil… In likeness of a Jew”, reflecting the partisan beliefs of the predominantly Christian audience of the time. Surely, we’ve evolved from having this outdated ‘black, and white’ judgement of religions; where they're either extremely great or purely evil and have moved on to a more wholesome way of thinking, where we accept everyone no matter what their beliefs…
