Nothing gets better or worst it just stays the same. Living in such society must have been overwhelming for this guy, but David is trying his best to maintain that society. Mr. Johnson was also a painter, but only did it once a year and now he wanted to do it right around the year. He wanted a change.
In the movie, the mayor of the town represents everything I hate. He’s completely against change, and being different. We see this problem in our own society all the time. The young generation started to wonder what’s outside of their town. Places where the road doesn’t go in a circle. David started to accept some of the changes in “Pleasantville”. Even though he knew the people of “Pleasantville” wanted to remain ‘pleasant’ he told the mayor that there were so many things better than remaining the same. He tried to convinced the mayor who is fighting against the change in court that color is more beautiful by using his mother as an example. This is what people who are fighting against change are fighting against. This is what causes all these problems today with discrimination because of these people, the ones that fight change. Change is something that is in all of us, and you cannot fight what is inside of you, and that is what those recalcitrant people fear
