Throughout all poems there are multiple techniques that are used. The most frequent technique through “Rally for Darfur” is repetition. In the first line of every stanza it states which genocide it is and says “...it was written and in Darfur it is being sealed.” Also in every stanza it says either “who shall…” or “who will…” after each statement follows something that could happen to the people; such as being raped or different ways on how they
were going to die. These statements are showing you just how serious this problem truly is. Using repetition, the author wants to make sure you understand just how important stopping genocides are.
Though repetition is a very straight-forward way for an author to make a point, there are other effective methods an author may choose. Another technique Matalon used in “Rally for Darfur” was imagery. In the second and third line in every stanza, but the last, it describes what horrible things the genocides do to people such as being raped, getting killed by swords, bullets, diseases, hunger, or even thirst. Saying this the author wants you to be aware of what terrible situations that the genocides are putting people through all the time, and that our voice can change it.
Overall, the author uses repetition and imagery to reveal the theme. In “Rally for Darfur” the theme is to show you just how horrible the genocides truly are, and to make sure you understand that your voice can make a difference and can help save lives. Are you willing to let your voice be heard to help or even save a life?
