The poem “We Were Cool” is a short poem with so much meaning. The way this words are used can make every person think of the poem differently. The reason for this is because the main theme of the poem is childhood, because the poem can remind people of their old was as a kid and the things they did to be cool or popular and in the poem the young pool players “left school”, “Sing sin”, and “lurk late”. Those things might have made the pool players feel that they were cool because of the mischievous things they did. I believe the breaks are more evident and have a bigger impact on how the story is told than the syntaxes in the other poem. The breaks impact the way the reader reads the poem and the pauses let you stop and think about each stanza.     This poem, like Before You Were Mine, is autobiographical, but more obviously so. Mrs. Tilscher is a real person, who taught Carol Ann Duffy in her last year at junior school. The poem is about rites of passage, the transition (move or change) from childhood to adolescence and the things we learn at school, from our teachers and from our peers. Duffy also associates the oppressive feeling we have in humid weather with the physical changes of puberty.
