Analysis Of The Southerner By Russel Alexander
The first piece was called The Southerner, by Russel Alexander, conducted by a student conductor, Juan Vargas, and played by the concert band. The Southerner was made for an American march and was very upbeat. The piece was quite short but had a joyful beat as if the march was a great victory. The piece was positive and I would say it was how I felt after I have successfully completed an exam that I know I did extremely well. It is an odd connection but when a person knows they aced an exam their mood and spirits change. Also, their confidence changes their posture and that is exactly how I relate to the first piece performance.     The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. The second movement was an Andante. It started with the horn and flute playing with monophonic texture. This created a calm sound that brought on a feeling warmth indoors on a cold winter night. It was in a minor mode and in triple meter. The middle of the movement included a great deal of dissonance and had an atonal rhythm that felt a bit unsettling.     The first piece by Prokofiev was very intense. The opening was very fast pace. It also contained minor notes that almost seemed like the instruments were out of tune.     In the early American colonies, the south and the north developed into two distinctly different colonies. Although their origins were both from Europe, their customs and living habits became so different that it would play a major role in America's history. There are many reasons why these differences occurred but only a few major reasons stand out. Religion, greed and the composition of the colonies are some of the major reasons why the north and south grew to be so different in the late 1600's. Different religions in specific colonies varied, but the people from the New England region were generally more devoted to their religious beliefs, whereas people from the south felt religion wasn't as important. Children from the north are taught from The Bible as soon as possible and this instills high moral values into the people. In the south only the wealthiest families could afford education, causing the common population to be ignorant and un-educated. The people of New England were willing to work together and help each other for the sake of the community because they felt that they were working under God's will. (Doc. A) The south on the other hand worked to better themselves through the Headright System, which ended up pitting the people against each other instead of working with each other. The people of Massachusetts agreed: "We whose names are underwritten, being by God's providence engaged together to make a plantation…" (Doc. D) This shows that religion greatly influenced the people of New England and the decisions they made. The South was influenced by greed and factors other than religion causing the values in the south to deteriorate. Differences in the way the colony members felt about religion is important in showing why the two regions became so diverse but it is not the only reason.
