An Essay Written by a Habitual Procrastinator Sitting in a twenty-four-hour coffee and doughnut shop at 2:41am, hunched over a computer, a college student listens through her noise-cancelling headphones to a playlist of classical music advertised to assist any listener with focusing. First, to avoid accidentally carrying out this grade destroying deed, one must know the process of how to procrastinate. Commonly, there are four stages of procrastination: denial, good intentions, extreme misfortune, and final push. An easy way to remember these stages is to liken them to the four stages of a human suffering from constipation’s digestive process: dental, good intestines, obscene absorption, and final push. The denial stage of procrastination consists of the student considering all her current requirements and then giving the highest priority to the least important task such as earning an achievement in her favorite video game. Resembling the dental stage of the digestive system, the denial stage is the only instant where the student can control his educational fate; once this path is chosen, the student is required to complete both the digestive and procrastination process. This tummy-ache presents itself as elevated levels of stress. The sudden realization of how little time college students have given themselves to finish their work is tremendously stressful. Adding this stressor to the already significantly high stress lives a typical college student leads in not healthy and can lead to serious health issues. The other tummy-ache may not make an appearance until after a college student’s work has been graded. Procrastinating rushes college students, not allowing them to spend time on details.
