When a song is as heavily covered as Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame” from his album Rock and Rollin with Fats Domino you know that there is something special about it. With recording artists such as Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and even the 1970s rock group, Cheap Trick recording the song many people know at least one version. However the original version has a special something about it that helps it stand out from the many covers. The song has an enticing hook, interesting historical context, and is an earworm that was with me for several days after I first heard the song.…
John Singleton’s Boyz N the Hood, is a film that strongly illustrates violence, drugs, family life, respect, responsibility, and education. The movies opens with a statement “One out every 21 Black American males will be murdered…most will die by the hands of anther Black male.”(John Singleton) This film concentrates less on the conditions imposed on the Black community and more so on two central themes, the lack of respect and inability to take responsibility. Throughout the film people show blatant disrespect for one another. ‘Brother’ fights ‘brother’; they call their own friends niggers and the women are referred to as whores and bitches. The scene at the cookout is a prime example of disrespect towards women; it takes for Tre to point…
Ernest J. Gaines said "There will always be men struggling to change, and there will always be those controlled by the past". Boyz in the Hood definitely put a lot of truth behind those words. After watching the film you have to ask yourself a series of questions: Which plays the larger role in your upbringing environment or nurture? Can an old dog be taught new tricks? Do you have complete control over your life? I will attempt to answer the questions with great detail while remaining as unbiased as possible.…
The question of p. 63 of Alexander George’s What Should I Do? “Medicine” asks, “An eleven-year old lies on the operating table, dying from an accident. He asks his doctor if he is going to die. If the doctor thinks he will, should he tell the child?”…
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in portraying his message through this song. Girls at that young of an age should be enjoying their childhood, but instead they are forced to become adults and take care of themselves.…
This novel takes place primarily in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia, during the period of the 1980s to the 2000s. Renee and Rob both met there in a bar named the ‘Eastern Standard’ both at the age of twenty-three. He initially planned to keep his relationship to Charlottesville strictly one of host and guest. Both he and Renee didn’t really favor Charlottesville. Then life had another plan for Rob and it was to fall in love. The setting was also a crucial part in the story because it was a music thriving environment at the time and in Charlottesville. Also, it shows that it greatly influenced the connection that Renee and Rob made with each other. The setting creates a very social atmosphere, which was something Rob wasn’t accustomed to until he began connecting with Renee. Three years after Renee died Sheffield is thinking of leaving Charlottesville when he states that, “Charlottesville was always going to be her place. I wanted it to stay that way.” Ergo, this excerpt shows that the setting is a key component to the memory of Renee. Soon after he moves to New York, he returned to Charlottesville to visit friends and he develops new friends. The entire aura of the book is based upon the setting. From the close bond that both “Robin Renee” shared during their closest times together in Charlottesville to their long distance that is represented symbolically with him living now in Brooklyn and Charlottesville and through all of the travels that they shared together as a couple . It also shows that even though he tries to move on after Renee he just can’t stop but want to return to the past (Charlottesville) and wish that Renee was still a part of his life.…

You have a home, but they don’t. You live in peace, but they don’t. You have a family, but they don’t. They are the people who endure the bitterness of society; war, poverty and discrimination. Then there are the children wedged in the difficulties of life, their dreams torn apart by the hands of selfish monsters. The monster that is tearing apart lives is what we call child abuse. This is our world. And it’s your choice if you want to change it.…
“Talking shit about a pretty sunset,” is a song that portrays an overall apathetic outlook on life. The listener can clearly hear the discontent expressed in the words sung and the execution in the music. Thoughts of suicide, phobia of commitment, lack and gain of motivation, fixation and illusions of a better life are all present. Through the complex breaks and climax of the song, tells an emotional story of revelation, realization and self-actualization.…
I’ve decided to do my in-dept analysis based on clips from the reality television show entitled, Love & Hip Hop New York. I thought this would be the perfect show to analyze because it is not fiction; it includes real life people and events. Throughout my analysis I will show how white privilege, internal and external racism, and sexism are all factors that people are faced with on a daily basis without even realizing it.…
The song that I chose to analyze is “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. The late Tupac Shakur was an African American rapper who was shot dead years ago. His powerful lyrics have impacted the rap industry to this day, because he spoke the truth. His lyrics directly related to his everyday struggles, and how being a successful African American is not an easy task to achieve. Rap usually talks about events of everyday life, and the song “Changes” talks about racial profiling, poverty, and how racism affects the everyday life of African American people. Note that this song came out in about 1996 where things were different, however the lyrics of this song still ring in the ears of people who are affected by the evil of racism.…
If I were making a soundtrack to my life, I would pick the song“Listen to Mama’s Words” by Jay Zhou, “ Father” by Chopstick Brother, “One Likes Summer the Other Likes Autumn” by Weiqi Fan, the music “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s and “Nocturne” by Chopin.…
One of my favorite songs, recently, has been J. Cole’s Love Yourz. This song relate to feelings that we can all relate to, feelings of envy and jealously. We often look at the life styles of those around us, and we see what they have, and we compare ourselves to them. We feel that if we don’t live a certain life style or drive a fancy car that we are not living a purposeful life. We fall into the trap of focusing on others blessings and ignoring our own. From personal experience I have done this. I have looked at the blessing of others, and wondered why my blessings were not the same.…
Many people believe that cursive is a relic of the past, and that the ability to use it is way down on the list of what's important. In my opinion, I believe that cursive is very important plus it looks flattering like you could set it as your phones wallpaper. Cursive writing stimulates the brain. You need it to do important things when you’re an adult like signing something or signatures. First of all Cursive looks so nice you could print it out and hang it on your wall or set it as your wallpaper on your phone.…
