Analysis Of Vanderbilt's Scaffolding
Scaffolding as defined by Vanderbilt’s Peabody College (2016) is a teaching practice through which teacher support is added for students to enhance mastery of an objective. They go on to include that the support is developed systematically on the experiences and knowledge as the introduced skill is developed. The aforementioned, support is given after a task or objective is presented as a chunk of material (Alder, 2014). Building knowledge gradually and reflecting/using past knowledge and experiences allows ELLs with limited formal schooling to get exposure to the concepts and allows for the teacher to make observations of what information is needed for remediation.

Not only does the subject offer accreditation, but skills for appropriate social interaction. I have broken down and expanded on elements of the accredited programme to not only offer an accredited topic, but also to offer functional skills which will be relevant to other FE provision and learning opportunities. Working with learners with ESBD’s can be both challenging and informative. In order to meet the needs of all learners certain considerations need to be taken into account at the planning and preparatory stage. These include; the suitability of the learning environment, the resources on offer and selection of those that are to be used, the way in which the lesson is to be delivered. Most importantly the development of a challenging and interesting lesson plan that offers the opportunity for differentiation and that caters for all the learners’ individual learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic). All this being said, it is important to remember that even if we have taken all of these considerations into account, learners may still have their own agendas. In light of this it is important to have a back-up plan, additional activities, extra resources that both motivate learners and enthuse them and help to address their changing…

The think-pair-share activity is a great scaffolding activity because it taps into prior knowledge, and allows students to have time to think to talk. Other ways to use scaffolding include showing and telling (modelling), teaching vocabulary words prior to discussions or learning, the use of visual aids, and using pauses to allow students to think and ask questions and then review…

My role as a teaching assistant is to support the class teacher whilst this ongoing assessment of pupils takes place. Supporting children who may require assistance the child has work to a certain target in the lesson which the teacher provides at the beginning of the lesson. This can be through using the following “WALT” method which is written on the board. This stands for WE ARE LEARNING TODAY. From this both the children and myself are clear about what we are learning.…

During the CAD/CAM lessons at university I had really struggled, firstly with getting my head around using the computers so prolifically, as they were pretty much alien to me as a dressmaker and then secondly, learning a whole new world of designing on 2d Design and Solidworks. However, I was surprised at when push came to shove and I was in a KS3 classroom, with children needing assistance, sparks of useful (well, sometimes, useful) information would come to the fore and help out. I realised that sitting one-to-one with a pupil we could, through communication, analysis, trial and error and stamina work through the process to get to our goal. I would have been happier in these initial cases to have provided a perfectly succinct solution to the pupils’ problems, but I believe it was actually enormously beneficial to be so lacking in subject knowledge, as I built relationships with many of the pupils and became more aware of their learning styles, needs and also shared their sense of achievement.…

One of the ways that the learning can be differentiated is through the support given to the children. This could be whether or not they get adult support as well as the support offered through the use of worksheets and resources. Resources that could be implemented in order to ensure that lower ability students are still able to progress in their learning include, key word banks, work sheets with additional support e.g sentence starters and flashcards. By implementing these resources and support systems it allows the lower ability students to achieve the same lesson objectives just with additional guidance. This method of differentiation allows all of the children to be able to complete the same tasks and reach the same objectives but helps to ensure that they are all supported and is therefore a positive method for keeping up their self-confidence and helping them to progress in their own learning.…

All the teaching I have carried out recently is in relation to people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. Some is classroom based, such as Risk and Conflict Management, Autism and behaviour interventions relating to an individual service user. I also used to teach PRICE (Protecting Rights In a Caring Environment). This is a physical intervention course which is practical and physical with no desks; therefore the teaching and learning strategies are different for this course. It tends to use a style more like EDIP (Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate and Practice). Allen’s (1919) four-step method, as cited in Gravells (2012, p.95) describes that it starts with explaining the task, then demonstrating it, then asking the students to imitate it and finally the students to practice it, correcting any errors. This method is useful for practical tasks to be taught.…

A sense of competence is accomplished when the teacher provides clear expectations that are attainable by the student (Brophy, 1998). A student's skills can be matched to the challenges of the classroom activities by relating the new material to their prior knowledge (Skinner & Belmont, 1993). A sense of competence and positive feedback throughout the classroom activities will eliminate the fear of failure and make the material more meaningful to the student (Brophy,…

Aspy and Grossman (2011) suggests that the antecedent intervention will consist of explaining the expectations, to make it more structured and predictable for the student. The use of visuals will also be used, due to the student’s speech and language impairment. The targeted instruction will include the same concepts taught in the Social StoryTM, including staying in the work area, keeping eyes on teacher, and sitting in his chair appropriately. The short session will include a presentation of the appropriate behaviors with the use of visuals, questioning the student for comprehension, combined with role-play.…

Scaffolding is a term that’s being debated throughout all educational sectors. Normally interpreted as “a form of support for the development and learning of children and young people", scaffolding allows teachers to guide their pupils with generic questions. However, because the nature of this notion is vague, many find using this teaching technique difficult and might end up hindering a child’s development. Although, if used correctly, scaffolding can help children with social situations and higher brain development. In the end, the concept is complicated, but can be a useful tool if professional gain a deeper understanding of…
