The third industrial revolution is not in the future, but it is right now. Vonnegut's picture of the third revolution doesn’t show the present, it shows the end stages of what the third industrial revolution might look like. The third industrial revolution is when all manufacturing goes digital. Such as smart AI and computers that can compute problems in the businesses and fix those issues efficiently. What they have been doing is simulating production jobs with new types of virtual machines. What they are trying to prove here is that computers, with this software, could run a whole factory of production jobs in one simple computer system (DIRAC-based infrastructure). Computers are already used to take production jobs, but with this new architecture, they are able to do it more efficiently, and use less computer resources.
