When trying to keep your family from perpetuating prejudice watching who both you and your children spend time with could be a major factor. By being around others who are prejudiced it can slowly bring you into their state of mind even if you were once the most open minded individual. Hearing someone day in and day ate spew hateful, unnecessary comments at others can slowly bring you down that road of perpetuating prejudice.
Lastly if you hope to keep your family out of the trap of perpetuating prejudice onto others it is very important to build strong trust or strong relationships with those who are different then you in some way. By providing a good example to the children in the family by being willing to work towards a trusting relationship with someone different in any way you show them that this is not only acceptable but the right thing to do. This child will then grow up knowing that being different is okay and that in itself will help to diffuse future families from falling into that trap of perpetuating prejudice onto

In Danielle Evan’s short story “Snakes,” Evans molds a pattern that families seem to fit, a mold imbedded with guilt. Evans tells this story through the eyes of a nine year old girl named Tara, who comes from interracial parents. Family is supposed to be there to love and support each other, but sometimes people lie in order to persuade one into doing what they see fit, turning into a snowball of lies that soon consumes ones mental being. To reduce problems of racial prejudice in society individuals need to alter their cognitive strategies that are causing them to briefly categorize people in particularly negative ways. Witter, Hammer and Dunn express in in the textbook Adjust, that stereotypes are often automatic customs that occur unintentional and unconsciously. However, these automatic customs can be superseded, though it requires awareness from the individual that…
