In the novel Another by Yukito Ayatsuji, the main character is Kouichi Sakakibara. He is a 15 year old boy who moved from a private school in Tokyo to a public one in Yomiyama in 1993. Obviously moving to a new school would pose some getting used to, but at Yomiyama North he was placed in class 3-3. Class 3-3 isn’t like the normal classes and was actually cursed 26 years ago. Due to the class having it’s unfortunate history with the curse, it leads Kouichi to have a great curiosity to the events 26 years ago. When Kouichi saw Mei at school, he thought it was completely okay to approach her and start a conversation like he would with any person. Unfortunately due to him doing that, it violated the conditions of the charm and people began to die. Unknowingly to the class though, the calamity had already started back in April with the death of Mei's twin sister, Misaki Fujioka.
After the class thought that Kouichi had broken the charm by acknowledging Mei, the calamity continued to claim the lives of students and students' family members, further proving to the students that the calamity is real and happening. Eventually, the classes attempts to make the charm stronger by making Kouichi a non-existent student as well. But soon after, the in class suicide of class 3-3’s homeroom teacher show that the extra countermeasure proved to be useless.
As a result of trying to end the Calamity and regain their identities as students of class 3-3, Kouichi and Mei start to search for a solution and end up stumbling across a clue. Their investigation led them to Katsumi Matsunaga and the clue found in the old class 3-3 15 years ago. That clue was an audio recording detailing the events of the night those two students died on the classes way back from the shrine in 1983 and the answer to ending the
