Using a melodic narrative form, the speaker laments the death of many years ago, of his beloved young bride Annabel Lee. The envious angels caused the girl's death to "dissever" (separate) the young married couple. He tells briefly of her funeral and entombment" in her sepulcher… by the sea." The narrator then reveals that he has been unable to accept their separation. Since her death, he has spent night after night at her tomb, an astonishing and perverse example of the immortality of young love. Edgar Allan Poe was dedicated to his late wife, she died of tuberculosis, two years after its publication of ‘’The Raven’’.
Poe uses figurative language in this poem: Simile, Metaphor, and Hyperbole. Poe didn't use Simile in this poem, but he used Metaphor and Hyperbole. He uses Metaphor only in the line 7 on the stanza 2 (‘I was a child and she was a child’). He also used Hyperbole in the line 11-12 on the stanza 2 (‘With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me’), in the line 21-22 on the stanza 4 (‘The angels, not half so happy in heaven, went envying her and me’), in the line 27-28 on the stanza 5 (‘But our love it was stronger by far than the love of those who were older than we ’) and also in the line 35 on the stanza 36 (‘And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes’).
