Sacha is the first foreigner I have ever seen that really knows Indonesian very well. I would like to thank to her because of her videos collections that describing Indonesian as well as she know, I am able to realize that most of Indonesians are unique and also have bad habitual. Well, I like the way she describe how Indonesian’s behavior and habitual. It seems like she has already lived in Indonesian for a half of century. Haha, I am just kidding. I wonder how she could know Indonesian after living in Indonesian for only about ten years. It is very amazing about the way she understands the language and local culture in 10 years. May be if I were her, I need more than ten years for knowing another cultures. I guess she is very outstanding and able to do an accurate impression of Indonesian habitual.
Let us talk about what she has already given to us from her creative videos about Indonesians. Well, after I watch the series video of “How to act Indonesian” and “Anti Ribet di Indonesia”, I realize that she really interested in learning about Indonesians behaviors and habitual. The videos are really telling the truth about us, Indonesians. Our habitual, especially the bad habitual such as asking the children to buy a cigarette, feel free to put garbage everywhere we want, how difficult the bureaucracy of Indonesian government −which is very annoying for Indonesians, how people do not like to follow the governments regulation, etc.
My reaction after watching those videos is complicated; I am confused whether I really feel angry, unpleased, embarrassed, or even think if this is very sensitive because it can be racial topic. Actually the first reaction after watching those video is I could not stop laughing, those

Watching these events unfold visually compelled me in way I never quite had been before from an emotional standpoint- the social implications of these events are so much graver and severe than I had even thought previously. As the documentary noted in the third act, racism is so deeply rooted in American soil that one born here or moving here after the most blatant forms of racism have vanished (segregation) finds themselves unwittingly fitting into racialized society. Without viewing films like these and having the kinds of discussions we do in class about institutionalized racism, it is rather easy to accept it as normal having grown up from a place of privilege.…

What are my attitude and feelings toward the video? Well, my attitude toward it was non relatable. Thankfully I don’t go through the things they do and don’t have to worry about what they worry about. My feelings toward it is that I know that people go through this everyday. I’m very lucky I’m not one of those kids that doesn’t know if they’re getting food that night, where they are going to sleep, and if they are going to see their parents ever again.…

I learned many new things from this video. I learned that many people died in the black’s non-violent revolution for freedom and rights. I also learned that most African Americans were paid an average of only about $700. African Americans were denied education at all white schools, and were only allowed a less than average education at black schools. Under the Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education, a number of African American Honors students integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Every day they had to endure abuse from a huge angry mob that protested integration and wanted segregation. I feel that I would not have been able to put up with all that abuse. Those nine students that integrated Central High had great determination and never gave up hope. I also learned that it was a very long and hard struggle for all blacks during the Civil Rights Movement. The KKK terrorized blacks and killed them. Many African Americans were killed before they won the rights that they deserve. I was very proud of all the African Americans that participated in things like the Montgomery bus boycott because it showed that they weren’t afraid of standing up for themselves. I felt joyful that they always had the courage to stay non-violent, because if they turned to violence, the situation would not have turned out the same way. Now I will do anything that I can to eliminate discrimination of anyone because it is a very serious and destructive…

The effect that was made in the students facing these problems in their schools was very terrifying, some of them were in a point of being embarrassed of their heritage. They were embarrassed of being Mexican Americans, and this was something that had to be changed. The rise up of the Chicano students to demand their district officials for equal education rights in their school, was a movement that made the Chicano voice strong not only at East LA but all over the country. This is one point everyone should be able to understand, the video gives us the struggles Mexican Americans were facing at the time, and how they became together to overcome this issue is an example of unity something that we need to do now a days to become stronger and make our voices heard as a…

Living in this new generation, it was difficult for me to stay focus on the film. Yet, after few tries of diverting my interests forcefully to watch the film, it had some scenes that will run into your mind. The good thing about the film was it preserved the whole Islamic and Filipino culture. The characters used the dialect spoken in South Cotabato, where the film was shot, as the medium language. There were also few Arabic words, especially in their Sallah or Common Prayer is used. Despite the differences between our religions in the film, the quality of being family-oriented of we rural or urban Filipinos was also shown. These are the waking up early of the members of the family to start working, visiting of relatives even if they are far and saying prayers before eating meals. They also paid a big respect to their Abu or Father. Abus are like the head of the town. Another was how they have their own versions of babaylan. During the open forum, the director itself confessed how he paralleled his life to one of the families from the movie. One character is a balikbayan and he was not able to attend his mother’s funeral just like what happened to Mr. Mangansakan. Lastly, it was interesting to look how and when the…

Considering the enormous historical – political and social – shifts that have occurred in Indonesia during the last century, the form of the kebaya, has remained relatively unchanged. Its function and meaning however, in contrast to its form, has seen major changes in colonial and post-colonial Indonesia, operating to meet different groups’ political agendas, social needs and aspirations. The kebaya has come to symbolize the emancipation of women in Indonesia through a representation linking the kebaya to the 19th century “proto-feminist” figure of Raden A. Kartini.…

Since the television was invented in 1924, news and current affair programs have become one of our main media sources. These sources attempt to inform on the cultural, political and social events of current importance and interest. However, through analysis of construction, it becomes evident that current affairs do not present true fact, instead show a representation of reality that is of interest to its target audience. The Current affair segment “Bali Nine Death Row” on Sunday Nights, presents a controversial issue that focuses on the current lives of the men whom were involved in a drug related crime taken place on the 17th April 2005. This segment successfully informs us on this issue as well as entertaining us, through presenting issues of interest rather than issues that are current news, focusing on the dramatic story of the death sentence and highlighting areas such as their family and their future in order to receive an emotional response from the target audience. The construction of this segment is a vital aspect in persuading the audience to react in a way that reflects the Channels ideology towards the issue, and through the use of techniques such as interviews, camera shots, written text and inclusive language, the audience is not only positioned to view an issue in a certain way, but is informed about it in an entertaining way that is of interest to them.…
