The 2016 race for president is expected to be one of the most interesting of all time. A large amount of support surrounds a select few candidates. However, these candidates also have an abundance of hatred directed towards them. One of the most controversial candidates is the one and only Donald Trump. Although some people view Trump as an illegitimate candidate, he has considerable support due to his ability to draw on the emotions of the American people, the demand for change in the federal government and the increasing polarization of the political parties.

Many presidents in the past have been elected because the American people viewed them as a change for their country. In the recent past, the American people have faced “six years of Obama forcing unpopular policies down Americans’ throats; six years of lies and misdeeds by unaccountable bureaucrats; six years of lame growth and resulting wage suppression; six years of appeasing our enemies and facing down our friends; six years of dividing the country…” (Peeks). Trump appeals to voters who are very unhappy with Obama as president. Republicans are extremely angry as Obama has been able to implement many policies via executive action that the GOP Congress cannot do anything about. Trump voices the outrage of these voters and is viewed as the candidate that is able to solve the issues caused by Obama. While political ideology may not be growing more polarized, “Americans are experiencing more affective polarization — that is, regardless of where their views are moving, liberals increasingly dislike conservatives, and conservatives increasingly dislike liberals” (Kurtzleben). This polarization creates support for candidates whose viewpoints will help their side and hurt the other side. Compromise is not a popular topic among the increasing animosity between the political parties. Not only are the political parties developing increasing hatred of the other, they are also distrusting the government more and a “lack of trust in the government means Americans … may be particularly willing to vote for an ‘outsider’” (Kutzleben). Trump fits this description of an outsider as his background is in business, not politics. Some voters view his background as a positive as he will not be influenced by politics as much as the current government.
