Analyzing Bee Gees The Headless Horseman's Playlist
Ryker Clinger

The Headless horseman’s playlist would have songs about him being dead, him not talking, and songs about him only going out at night. The first song on his playlist would be “Stayin Alive” By Bee Gees. In the book it says “The headless horseman, who had been heard several times of late, patrolling the country; and it is said, tethered to his horse nightly among the graves in the churchyard” (45-46). He is dead obviously because he has no head and goes around the churchyard where his grave is. The next song on his playlist would be “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed. In the book it reads “Summoning up, therefore, a show of courage, he demanded in stammering accents- ‘Who are you?’ He received no reply” (53). He is silent because

The speaker tells us how death is patient and generous. Death not only is being a gentleman to the speaker, but he also takes her on a carriage ride. On the ride he takes her through places that she remembers, even one where she is left buried. We are left thinking that the speaker is alive throughout their journey and that death is taking her on a ride to her burial spot. But once we reach the last stanza of the poem, we are then surprised that the speaker has been dead for centuries and that it’s her spirit thinking about the day of her death. We are then told that her journey not only continues after her grave, but it goes on into…

WNOX’s Mid-Day Merry-Go-Round, which aired from 1936 to 1961, was a pivotal program in the history of country music. Wildly popular throughout East Tennessee and bordering states, the show’s legacy outside of Knoxville will likely remain as something of a farm team for acts who would go on to make it big in Nashville. A few off-air and studio recordings from the 1950s have been found, but it’s long been thought that no recordings of the show’s earliest days survived. Turns out a recording of the Merry-Go-Round from Friday, November 11, 1937 has been in the Radio Archive of the University of Memphis for years, and it reveals a vastly different Merry-Go-Round than most might expect.…

When a song is as heavily covered as Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame” from his album Rock and Rollin with Fats Domino you know that there is something special about it. With recording artists such as Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and even the 1970s rock group, Cheap Trick recording the song many people know at least one version. However the original version has a special something about it that helps it stand out from the many covers. The song has an enticing hook, interesting historical context, and is an earworm that was with me for several days after I first heard the song.…

The reason why I believe this, is because it is the key story line that is present both versions of “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” as well as it is what both the movie and the story are centered around, and that is the fact that the Horseman had lost his head and is currently searching for it, killing people until he finds…

Problems between composers and the general public have been mounting for over one hundred years. As advanced music rapidly changes, the public seemingly fails to posses the musical knowledge necessary to appreciate modern works of contemporary music. In 1958, Milton Babbitt examined this relationship in a piece entitled “Who Cares if You Listen?” In the article, Babbitt asses the public’s feelings on “advanced” music and concludes that it should not concern composers if their work doesn’t get an audience beyond a few colleagues. Musical masterpieces including Babbitt’s Semi Simple Variations and Stockhausen’s Gesang der Jünglinge exemplify why this is the case. Despite efforts to reach out to the public by composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, the divide that separates these entities is even greater today.…

Miguel Primentel, a R&B and soul artist, was a breath of fresh air to the R&B game in the 2010-2013 time frame. The Ballad “Candles in the Sun” was a simple, yet powerful song with a very nice message. This song was released on his second studio album Kaleidoscope Dream on September 25, 2012. Candles in the sun didn’t chart because wasn’t a single, but the album was number three on the Billboard 200 (Wikipedia 2016). “I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life” (Miguel 2013) The song was very repetitive but had an amazing message. The song was to make you think and call to attention to the problems of the world. During 2011 and 2012 there were conflicts in the middle east, many countries had political…

The musical and film of the Sound of Music is set in Austria in the late 1930s with Europe on the brink of the Second World War. In historical context Austria has been portrayed by some historians at the first victim on Hitler’s expansionism of the Third Reich as part of its plan to conquer Europe and remedy for the injustices in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The song that I chose to analyze is “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. The late Tupac Shakur was an African American rapper who was shot dead years ago. His powerful lyrics have impacted the rap industry to this day, because he spoke the truth. His lyrics directly related to his everyday struggles, and how being a successful African American is not an easy task to achieve. Rap usually talks about events of everyday life, and the song “Changes” talks about racial profiling, poverty, and how racism affects the everyday life of African American people. Note that this song came out in about 1996 where things were different, however the lyrics of this song still ring in the ears of people who are affected by the evil of racism.…

In the songs “Jolene” by Dolly Parton and “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, we are shown two women’s take on infidelity. One perspective shows us a woman’s vengeance, and her reaction to being betrayed, but does so in a way that is light-hearted and slightly comical. The other paints a much more personal and vulnerable picture, it’s Dolly’s plea to the “other woman”. Both of these perspectives are easily relatable to the listener, because we have all felt broken, we have all felt vengeful, and we have all felt the breath of fresh air after you pick yourself up.…

In The Song of Songs, the Shulamite and her lover are everything but what society conforms to. In their Hebrew society there are rules and restrictions pertaining to sexual relations and who is allowed to marry who. These rules are stated in the book of Deuteronomy, and if the citizens do not abide by the laws written in the book, the punishments were harsh and brutal. However, the Shulamite and her lover seemed to be living in their own world where they could not care less about what society thought of them. In this poem, The Shulamite and her lover break many laws, and in most cases, desire seems to be considered a higher law to them than anything written in Deuteronomy.…
