Analyzing Ella Wheeler Wilcox's Poem 'Solitude'
Solitude by Ella Wheeler Wilcox is a poem that truly changed the way I viewed the world. I related to it on a level I hadn’t realized I could as a freshman, reciting it to my Language Arts class. It’s message of woe rings true whenever I face rejection, insecurity, or struggle. I have great friends with whom I can’t stop laughing with and share timeless memories with, but it is in the moments of sorrow where I feel as if I am alone. This world and the people in it have so many of it’s own problems, and I must have the strength to conquer my own. This poem has shown me that I am the only one who controls my happiness. When things go bad, I can’t rely on anyone or anything else to make myself happy. Of course, I can let myself be sad for a bit,

Certainly, one of the goblins’ treachery effects is the loss of the notion of time for Lizzie (V.449) and it previously happened to Laura (V.139). Despite having being attacked by wicked creatures, Lizzie walks home happily. The bouncing of the coin is like a victorious hymn for her, the proof that she has confronted and overcome temptation. She conserves her kind heart and thus her purity and vitality, which make her run home.…

This poem reminded me of a situation I had with someone I considered my best friend. We one day got into an argument which they blamed me for something I didn’t do but no matter how much I explained myself they wouldn’t believe me. This hurt me to a point where I closed myself off to people who truly cared about me. Through this experience I learned that everyone isn’t going to treat you fairly, but that you should always treat yourself with respect. The story doesn’t end there.…

The poem that I will analyze is from Sharon Olds, The Girl. This poem is quite graphic but it describes a life lesson that two girls had to endure. This poem describes a graphic preplanned rape event. The girls were 12 years old, it seems that they were at the wrong place and living a wild life, and getting involved with the erroneous people. They partied with their supposed best friend, this is what I am getting from the poem, they were being chased and after being caught they were raped. During trial they were asked to state what had happened to them. They exclaimed who their rapist were. After they went through that, the author goes along in explaining how one of the girls’ lives had changed. The fact that she no longer went to parties that smoked and did wild things. The girl was considered a good girl, a girl that thanked God, and a girl that had cheerleading in her life.…

The theme of this poem by Krista Wheeler is it is never too late to change and turn your life around. The poem is about a student that is currently making poor choices when it comes to his academic success. The speaker is explaining to the child that what they are doing is wrong and that there is still time to change and make things better. Firstly, the poem states “work, work so that you will one day become glad”, this passage shows that if the child does not give up and continues to work hard he will be very appreciative of this decision in the future.…

    1. In the opening paragraphs, White's attitude was of reminasance and awe. The nostalgia of his memory shared with us not once but twice. His urge to revisit the lake was strengthened with the readers urge to read just a bit more detail. White claws us into the memory with him, like we were there as a story teller, telling ourselves about what was happening, what it smelled and felt like. His attitude was of a warm "jollity" that invited us to join.…

As humans we have the natural reaction to want more than we already have. We often focus on what is ahead of us or what we could have, rather than appreciating and accepting the pleasantness that we may already have in our life. In Young’s poem he starts off with a sad reflection of how the average person, including himself, handles hardships in their life. Young explains how an individual yearns to be significant in life, but…

This is my favourite poem as it describes hope by using a powerful array of metaphors to enhance its effect. While it is true that many people all over the world live in extremely challenging and life threatening situations, leading hard lives in appalling conditions. What keeps people going in such circumstances is the glimmer of hope that things can change. This is one thought that came to mind when first reading the poem and this is what attracted me to it and as it relates to any hopeless situations it really does apply to all aspects of life.…
