Erikson’s 8 Stages of Development
Stage 1 Trust vs Mistrust: strength/virtue gained hope
This stage occurs during infancy, birth to age 1, and it is during this stage that the infant gains the ability to either trust an adult or mistrust an adult. According to Erikson’s theory, if an infant is well fed and cared for the infant will develop a trust with the caregiver and will demonstrate emotions of happiness and faith in humanity. However, if an infant is not properly fed, abused, or not cared for the infant will develop a sense of mistrust in the caregiver and will demonstrate emotions of fear and distress.

According to Erikson’s theory it is during this time that the adolescence develops the sense of their own abilities and skills. They see themselves at being able to complete tasks and master skills that are given to them. They experience success and it intrinsically motivates them to continually complete tasks and master skills both in and out of the classroom. However, when an adolescence enters school without much knowledge and starts to compare himself/herself to their peers they start to lose confidence and lose self-esteem. According to Erikson’s theory, as the older adult reflects back on their lives they start to remember their accomplishments and feel a sense of fulfillment for living a full life. However, some older adults start to remember their failures in life and start to feel afraid that they did not lived a fulfilled life. Many start to feel at peace with the world to face death. However, if the older adult did not feel at peace they become angry at themselves and the world. They also start to wish for a redo of their lives.
