The fascinating documentary, Devil’s Playground, is centered on a period called Rumspringa, which is a period of time when Amish youth, boys more than girls, experience greater freedom. They are no longer under the control of their parents on the weekends and, because they are not baptized, they are not yet under the authority of the church. During this time, many Amish youth adhere to traditional Amish behavior. Others, however, experiment with “worldly” activities (2014). The main question during Rumspringa is whether or not to be Amish.…
These cruel parts of the world have not had the chance to corrupt her. One night when Tom Robinson was in jail Atticus went to sit out front so no one would bother Tom. Jem, Dill, and Scout wanted to know as to why he would go to the jail so late at night so they followed him. Soon after the kids got there the men in the town showed up to kill Tom. The kids then and went to stand in between the men and Atticus. Because of Scout's innocence she did not understand that the men were there to hurt anyone, so she started a conversation with one of the men; she asked about his kid and how he was doing. Once the man realized that she was just a little innocent girl she told everyone to leave because he did not want anyone to do anything in front of the kids that could take there innocents…

Much like poetry, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Music and poetry are two platforms in which artists from the beginning of time have chosen to circulate their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Although different in popularity, these mediums are alike in various ways. Nonetheless, not every song you hear on the radio can be properly analyzed using procedures that you would follow to evaluate poetry. A song has to contain certain literary elements essential to poetry, such as the song “From Eden” by Hozier, in order for it to be analyzed. Hozier is recognized for his sentimental lyrics and use of poetic elements to add musicality and rhythm to his music. Through symbolism, repetition, and…
Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…
A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. Upon analyzing the symbols, visual imagery and theme throughout this poem the readers will better comprehend the poem to its entirety; these elements symbolize permanence, which is the meaning of the entire poem.…
During the Finch children’s return from the Maycomb pageant, where Scout performed as a ham, Bob snuck behind Scout and Jem and attacked the two children. Scout illustrates their fear, saying, “...I fell to the ground and rolled as far as I could, floundering to escape my wire prison. From somewhere near by came scuffling, kicking sounds, sounds of shoes and flesh scraping dirt and roots… More scuffling, and there came a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed.” (Lee 262). This is a repercussion of Atticus’ drive to represent his client to the fullest extent because Bob Ewell’s idea of stealing back the pride Atticus took from him is to take what Atticus cares for most-- his children. Lastly, the aggressive acts set in motion by Mr. Ewell who was provoked by Mr. Finch’s fight for Mr. Robinson resulted in Bob Ewell’s death. Bob is injured badly by the scuffle he began, and dies because of a stab wound. This is, indirectly, Atticus’ fault because if he hadn’t put his effort into the case he was given, then Bob wouldn’t have attacked the children, and if Bob hadn’t attacked the children, Arthur wouldn’t have helped the children and murdered Mr. Ewell.…
A few days later we heard about a tragedy that happened. Mr. Ewell tried to attack Jem and Scout on the way home from the play. Apparently he was drunk and fell on his own knife but there was talk that Boo Radley came and saved their lives, and in the process killin Mr. Ewell. Either way I’m…
On her way past the house she caught a glimpse of something in the tree. Scout says this around chapter 3, “Some tinfoil was sticking in a knot-hole just above my eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun” (44). This is the first thing that Scout finds in the knot-hole. The first gift from boo Radley, although she didn’t know it yet. Further in the book Jem and Scout find more gifts in the tree and are disappointed when Nathan fills the knot-hole with cement. Jem is explaining what happened that night of the fire, and Scout is asking what had happened. “Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he put the blanket around you”. Scout nearly through up when she heard this. Jem continues to say, “He sneaked out of the house-turn 'round-sneaked up, an' went like this!'" This is when Ms. Maudie house burned down. Scout was scared when she found out that boo was behind her, although she is starting to understand him. Scout and Jem are now so curious about him and start to understand that he could be nice, and not this mean monster. The reality is that Boo is a nice guy and not the mean monster they assumed he…
To Kill a Mockingbird is a story about the narrator’s childhood growing up in a vapid neighborhood in Maycomb County, Alabama. The narrator is Jean Louise Finch, Scout, and her brother Jem always enjoy playing with Dill, who comes from Mississippi to spend the summer with one of Jem and Scout’s neighbors. Scout’s dad is Atticus. His vocation was a lawyer and state legislator; he is very well respected throughout the county. One day while Scout was walking home after her easy first grade school day, she sees tinfoil in the knothole of a tree in the infamous Radley Place. She removes the tinfoil and reveals a wad of chewing gum which she promptly puts in her mouth. On the last day of school she finds Indian-Head pennies in the same knothole. Over the summer, Dill and Jem distance themselves from Scout to plan a way to get Boo Radley out of the house. There are many theories or legends about the Radleys and nobody truly fathoms why Boo Radley stays in the house all day but one theory is that he is an extremely devoted Baptist that he is too worried about his next life (heaven or hell) that he forgets to live his current life. But then on Dill’s last day in Maycomb, Dill, Jem and Scout embark at night to peek through the window. But a large shadow creeps up on them and they bolt for the fence and hear a shotgun go off behind them. Jem’s pants got caught in fence when they fled and when Jem goes back to get them later that night, and they were sloppily stitched up and folded on the top of the fence. Then as school start they find grey twine, two soap figures that resemble Jem and Scout, more chewing gum, a spelling bee medal, and an old pocket watch on separate occassions. One day the hole is filled with cement and Nathan Radley said that he plugged it because the tree was dying.…
To begin, Scout acquainted herself objective to never hold grudges. Bob Ewells, the offsetting man who attacked Jem and Scout, held a harrowing grudge against Atticus for exasperating him in court, and he winded up being killed. Scout uses that recognition and awareness for future reference for herself and others, to forgive, and forget. Equally as important, Scout took as example from her prudent older brother and Boo Radley in this ghastly attack, to invariably look after one another. During the attack, Jem told Scout to run leading up the attack, and Boo shot Bob in order to save the lives of the virtuous children. Scout now reflects on the event of Boo and Jem displaying the lesson, to look after one another, as a way to follow their footsteps and morals. Lastly, the moral never judge someone until a mile is walked in their shoes is taught to Scout during the vulgar attack after the Halloween party. When Scout was standing on the Radley porch and observantly peering at the neighborhood, she regards,”Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough”(279). She now seizes the realization that Dill, Jem, and her all misjudged Boo Radley altogether before ever meeting him. Scout takes away from this involvement to never misconceive someone before getting to know them. Scout learns various influential and vital life lessons due to the attack after the Halloween…
You may ask, “What is the big idea behind To Kill a Mockingbird?”. This report is…
To Kill a Mockingbird is a fiction novel that takes place in a small town in Alabama during the Depression, and is narrated by a little girl named Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. She is a rowdy little girl that has strong opinions, loves her family, and likes to play outside. Scout tries to get her father to excuse her from school because of the teacher that she doesn't like, Miss Caroline, who doesn't know the usual Maycomb culture. It shows how stubborn she is and that she has a very short temper for such a little girl. She loves her family and thinks her dad is a very good person, if not a little old. She and her brother Jem, who is also close to Scout, play outside all the time and even made a snowman of half dirt, half snow. Her father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer who cares for everyone and is very kind. She loves her father very much and goes to him for advice when her life gets difficult. Scout, Jem, and their friend Dill, are interested in the rumors about a man named Boo Radley, who lives in their neighborhood but never leaves his house and some people say that at night, he comes and peers through peoples windows. A tree on the way back from school near the Radley house has a hole where things are left for Scout and Jem, like pennies, chewing gum, and soap carved figures of a little boy and girl who look like Scout and Jem. They don't know where these gifts are coming from, and when they go to leave a note for the person who gives them the gifts, they find that Boo's brother has filled the hole with cement. The next winter brings sudden snow, and Miss Maudie, Scout's favorite neighbor, has her house catch on fire. While Jem and Scout watch the fire from near the Radley house, someone puts a blanket around Scout without her realizing it. Not until she goes home, and Atticus asks her where the blanket came from, does she realize that Boo Radley must have put it around her while she…
The central focus of this lesson is composition, which students will achieve through writing an acrostic poem about one of the four seasons. The main purpose of using sensory details, to brainstorm descriptive words, will enhance the students’ writing. For example, using the word “sizzling” instead of “hot.” DeVries (2015) states, “Acrostic poems are formed by writing a single word or short phase vertically and using its letters to start the horizontal lines of the poem” (p. 319). By incorporating the essential literacy strategy, acrostic poems, students are practicing their writing and organizational skills. Thus, meeting the third grade Common Core State Standard in Writing (standard 4), “produce writing in which the development and organization…
