Analyzing The Poem 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night'
In the poem “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan
Thomas, expresses his thoughts on how old dying men should not give up and just accept their fate of death. Instead he persists that they fight back and “rage, rage against the dying of the light”(line 1). He wants them to put up a struggle and not just simply roll over and take what is given to them. This poem meant a lot to me as I have a dying grandfather and Thomas has a dying father so I understand where his emotions are coming from. Also how he wants his own father to put up a fight with death, my grandfather is doing the same as he has had two open-heart surgery’s and still refuses to live in a home. Although death is inevitable Thomas wants the dying men to rave against
the “dying of the light”(line 19). This poem also gave me a new outlook on how to look at my grandfather’s unfortunate, upcoming demise as he looks as his own father’s death as a fight to the last second. In the 5th stanza Thomas state’s that “Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay”(line 14). By that he means although they may be getting old and can no longer see they should use all the energy that they have left and “blaze like meteors” so they don’t just get ‘put out’ like a candle sniffer but rather go out with a bang or blaze so they can be satisfied with their last few moments. This poem had a strong effect on me as I know what Dylan Thomas was going through and I gain a better knowledge of how my own grandfather should go gentle into that good night.
