Thomas King’s Borders, is a first person narrative designed to represent the continuing loss of identity experienced by the native population in contemporary North America. Borders tells the story of a native family living on a reservation located close to the Albertan-Montanan boarder in Western Canada. The protagonist of Borders is the unnamed mother of the family, who by refusing to properly state her nationality, is not allowed to cross the border with her young son. When asked to state her nationality by the border authorities, the mother answers “Blackfoot.” This confuses the border guards,

King draws on the use of satire in Borders to comically address the lack of identity attributed to natives in contemporary society. This essay will critically examine King’s work to showcase the function of figurative cultural borders in modern day society, as well as the concerning issue of native identity in the text. The mother’s proud refusal to equate her racial background with citizenship, Laetita’s attitude toward her cultural identity as a Blackfoot in the text, and the treatment of the narrator and his mother by the border authorities: all illustrate the cultural and political position of King’s text.     In “Borderlands means you”, Anzaldua expresses how dominant culture forces one to assimilate to societal norms, but in doing so one must shed aspects of their culture or identity.     Once, there lived a boy; his grandfather migrated from Kenya during the First World War. He was raised among a diverse population. One day, at school, it was being announced that there was going to be a multicultural show. Being born in Canada, he never gave it much thought. Like everyone else, he attended this show.     The cyclic nature of access and maintenance of power includes propagandizing that accentuates belonging to tribes and incites xenophobia’s. In the film, a symbolic nirvana of Chief Bromden’s tribal background is portrayed through persistent tribal rhythms in the final scene as he elopes into the life-affirming wilderness. Pre Columbian America represents a period before colonization where the fundamental truth of belonging to the Earth, and to one another atomically satisfied a simple path to happiness.     Firstly, native people don’t really get treated fairly around places like borders, which can be identified in the short story “Borders”. ‘“I know … and I’d be proud to be Blackfoot if I were Blackfoot. But you have to be American or Canadian”’ (King 84). The Blackfoot woman in the short story does not want to identify her citizenship as American or Canadian but by Blackfoot because she believes that that is what she is.     The contrast between the son and his mother is initially presented in “Borders” when they make their first attempt at crossing the US border. This contrast is displayed here through the importance each character possesses for their identity. It is clear that the son does not have the same stubborn approach to his identity at the border that his mother has: “It would have been easier if my mother had just said ‘Canadian’ and been done with it, but I could see she wasn’t going to do that,” (King 135). The boy’s compliant attitude and low importance of identity is stressed again when he and his mother are speaking with the Inspector Pratt. Again, the son is willing to relinquish his identity as a non-Canadian, against his mothers actions, in order to cross the border to see his older sister: “I told Stella that we were Canadian and Blackfoot, but she said it didn’t count because I was a minor,” (137). The boy’s attitude presented by Thomas King is very different from his mothers. The boy’s mother is biased and not compliant.     Gloria Anzaldúa, in her novel Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, proclaims that “I will have my voice: Indian, Spanish, white. I will have my serpent’s tongue – my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence” (81). Anzaldúa is speaking out against those who encourage and demand that she (and other minorities) tread with caution when they speak. In fact, a common theme throughout many ethnic works is the “silence is golden” mantra. Many people, especially immigrants, are taught (and subsequently teach their own children) that what happens within the family and community should stay within the confines of the family and community. This request for silence leaves some feeling a close familial and cultural bond with their family (because they hold family secrets); while many others rebel and feel as though there voices are being suppressed maliciously. We see these “requests” for silence in Diana García’s When Living Was a Labor Camp and Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior. While these requests and/or orders do place limitations on a person and their interactions, I argue that many of particular requests for silence that we see in the works of García and Kingston are noble requests. The characters that suppress the voices of others are doing in an act of preservation of their culture and protection of their family and community.
