Analyzing The Theme Of Friendship In 'The Kite Runner'
Rose and Thorn
A friend is someone that you can trust, depends on, and turns to for help. A friend is someone who will be there for you no matter what. An anonymous author once said "The only rose without a thorn is friendship." This tells us that a true friendship is pure love, and it has no condition of any kind. In the first part of the novel The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini writes about how two young boys, Amir and Hassan grow up in the Afghanistan. Amir, who is the son of a Pashtun affluent (Vocab) businessman Baba, is always seeking Baba’s attention. Hassan is the son of Baba’s Hazara servant, Ali. In addition, Hassan is also the servant of Amir. They grow up, play, and get into trouble with each other. However, something terrible happens to Hassan, which changes their relationship and their lives forever. Hassan is always loyal to Amir and he is willing to do anything for Amir. On the other hand, Amir is not so sure about his relation with Hassan because they

Betrayal is a hurtful thing that can break any bond. For example, when Baba wants to take Amir to Ghargha Lake, Baba tells Amir to invite Hassan. However, Amir fabricates that Hassan has errands to run and he cannot join them because Amir wishes to be with Baba himself. (13) This shows Amir betrays Hassan for his selfishness and he does not want to share Baba. Finally, Amir betrays Hassan again which break their “friendship” once for all. Specifically, after Amir cuts the last kite during the tournament, Hassan runs Amir’s kite for him. On Hassan’s way back, he encounters Assef, who threatens to hurt Hassan unless he gives up Amir’s trophy. Next, Amir is watching Assef raping Hassan because Hassan doesn’t back down. However, Amir is too afraid of Assef and he walks away as if nothing has happened. (73) Amir betrayed Hassan by his inaction, and it is a wound that will never heals between

From the start and through his death, Hassan remains the same: loyal, forgiving, and good-natured. Hassan grew up with a very particular role in life. He prepares Amir’s breakfast and collects his books while Amir gets ready for school. Rather than going to school as well, Hassan stays and helps his father, Ali, get groceries and complete their chores. Instead of receiving his education, he stays home and lives as a servant to those richer than he. Hassan learns early on in life that it is his duty to sacrifice himself for others. As a result of growing up this way, Hassan is not prone to envy and is even happy with the way he lives; the life he has. Even after a traumatic, violent past, he remains innocent from the beginning and to the end of his life. There is no way for Hassan to become ‘good again’ because he had never been bad. Hassan’s ability to suffer without becoming bitter, his integrity, and what his character truly shows us that there is no way for him…

Throughout this novel, there are several different events of betray depicted, mainly between Amir and Hassan. However, one of the most significant example is when Amir etches Hassan as he gets raped by Assef. Amir states, “I had final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan the way he stood up for me all those times in the past-and accept whatever would happen to me if I could run, In the end, I ran. It shows that Amir had a chance to save Hassan, however he ran out. (68)” It shows that Amir is a coward, and he runs always runs away from his problem. Furthermore, he backstabbed Hassan by not standing up, nor fighting Assef to help save him. Another example of betrayal is portrayed by Amir. After the rape incident that happened to Hassan, Amir did not speak up for him. As Amir thinks about the alleyways, and is constantly reminded about Hassan rather than speaking up for him, he wanted Baba to dismiss, both of them so they can move on with their own lives. Amir states, “I went downstairs, crosses the yard, and I entered Ali, and Hassan`s living quarters by the loquat tree. I lifted Hassan`s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under” (9.21-22). Therefore, this shows now Amir lied and told Baba that Hassan stole the watch and money, when he was once betrayed, and deceived Amir. However, Hassan consistently stays loyal to Amir, and tells Bab that…

The opening paragraph of Khaled Hosseini’s novel "The Kite Runner" immediately expresses one of the central themes, guilt. Amir, the main character, is continuously antagonized by guilt. While on the surface, Amir seems to be a lighthearted child of a rich and popular father, he harbors the guiltiness of his sins deep within his heart. These guilts come back to haunt him throughout his whole life, resurfacing as vivid recollections in which he re-experiences his sins. While he tries to suppress his past and overlook these tragic moments, he feels remorse is persuaded him to take action. His father, who he fondly calls Baba, likewise harbors the guilt of his sins. To Amir, as well as to the rest of the world, Baba is seen as a strong and authoritative man, strong willed in both actions and heart. Yet under these fallacies lies a guilt that is so strong that all of his actions are based upon it. Both Amir and Baba are driven by these feelings of guilt, and every action they take and every decision they make is an attempt to reach redemption. Baba expresses his explanation behind that all sins are a variation of theft. “If you kill someone, you steal a man’s right to life and his family’s right to a father…

After witnessing his Hassan’s tragedy, Amir doesn’t feel happy but guilty that he didn’t stand out for his best friend. Such powerful self condemnation constructs his decision: “There is a way to be good again” (105). As a result, he makes up his mind to redeem himself by saving Sahrab, Hassan’s son. Besides remorsefulness, the reason that Amir tries so hard to save Sahrab is that Amir might consider Sahrab as a substitute of Hassan. When Amir finally “fights” inside the enemy, he again meets Assef. Undoubtedly, Amir is no match for Assef. However, this time, Amir doesn’t escape; instead, he let Assef bit him: “[Assef] kicked me even harder and I started laughing. [Assef] got mad and hit me harder, and the harder [Assef] kicked me, the harder I laughed” (154). As a result, Assef beats Amir so hard that Amir’s face turns bloody; however, such pain actually helps Amir feel relief since he thinks he deserves it. Suffering from the physical pain that he should have endured for Hassan years ago, Amir finally heals his psychological wound. At the end of the novel, when Amir helps Sahrab catches his kite, he says the exact words to Sahrab as Hassan once said to Amir: “For you, a thousand times over.” It also shows that Amir has eventually paid off his guilt and jealousness, and becomes a selfless, healthy, strong, and caring…

Although opposites attract, when jealousy, anger, envy, and shame are brought into a friendship is it really a genuine friendship? Throughout the entire novel there is no sign of Amir being as affectionate, sympathetic, loyal, and as attentive as Hassan is to him. The definition of a friend is described as “a person whom one knows and whom one has a bond of mutual affection”, Do Amir and Hassan fit the description of a friendship if they don’t share the same amount of affection towards each other? The answer is no, Amir and Hassan never shared the same amount of mutual affection. Amir and Hassan are not friends.…

After reading about his childhood and the life-changing events that took place during it, my initial perception of Amir was that he was selfish, even though he did not mean to be. He did not want to be so cruel, but he was a young boy, he was a bit confused, and at times jealous too. He only thought about his own suffering. His greed to overcome the pain he felt for not helping Hassan when Assef was beating him up, and the way he threw those pomegranates at Hassan, and saw the way Hassan just stood there and did nothing but inflict more pain on himself, was strong enough for him to commit one last sin and remove Hassan from his life, by slipping his new watch under Hassan’s mattress and, by claiming that Hassan stolen it, he got Ali and Hassan both removed from his house. This shows Amir’s greed.…
