A Rose for Emily
In the story “A Rose for Emily”, author William Faulkner conveys the main theme of time and how the townspeople treat Emily over generations.We get introduced to the theme when the tax men come to Emily’s house and they hear the ticking watch she had on. There are many different ways of interpreting the main theme in this story. The watch could have meant that her time was running out, time in general being scarce or that she totally was not aware of time as a whole, due to the author's writing style in this story. This was probably something that became common knowledge over the years when Emily did not kill herself with the arsenic that she had gotten from the store. Then once the smell appeared, the people started to draw a logical conclusion that Emily used the arsenic to poison Homer. But the indent in the pillow that lay right beside the body surprised the people. The hair and the indent on the pillow could have been Emily’s way of saying her final words on life before she died. It could have been an important legacy for the townspeople, whose parents has ruthlessly interfered in Emily’s happiness and who further isolated her out of fear, disgust, and spite. We knew that everyone felt pity for Emily. He states “Noting Homer’s disappearance, the people of Jefferson assumed he “had deserted her…. after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all” (Scherting 398). The give away here is the word ‘assume’. The townspeople always “assumed” reasons why EMily was the way she was and what she was doing and why she was doing them. They would say many rude comments and false statements about her that would make her look crazy when for all those people knew, she was none of the things stated about
