Boureev is a Russian climber who was not fluent when he spoke English, and many of his teammates found it difficult to build relations with him. Although Fischer brought Boukreev to be one of his guides, they would continuously argue amongst one another because Boukreev once again would climb far too ahead of the other climbers and Fischer, already ahead of the rest of the climbers, would have to help the stragglers. Each time Boukreev would disappear, it would only wear Fischer down, physically and mentally, eventually leading to a decrease in health. Boukreev told Fischer that if the climbers couldn’t climb without much help from their guide they shouldn’t be on Everest. Anatoli Boukreev was independent and stubborn, making his previous trips up Everest without supplemental oxygen and without extra weight such as a backpack to carry clothes or medical kits. He was so drained and was low on oxygen, he needed someone who was strong and smart enough to help him down, and Anatoli Boukreev was the man to do it. However Boukreev being how he is, was too concerned about himself. He left with a few other climbers not worried about what storm lay ahead. He left Fischer on top the mountain with many other clients who were not experienced enough to descend by themselves, let alone with a man who cannot stand. Fischer and many other clients died of hypothermia in a snowstorm on the top of Mount Everest. If Boukreev had stayed with the group, Fischer, and many others might have been able to survive given the help they needed to return
