TISSUES
Tissues are group of cells that work together to perform a particular functions.
 There are four main type of tissues. They are:
I.
Epithelial tissues
II. Connective tissues
III. Muscle tissues
IV. Nervous tissues

EPITHELIAL TISSUES

Simple epithelial tissues
This tissue has only one cell layer.

Compound epithelial tissues
This tissue has more than one cell layers.

EPITHELIAL TISSUES
Epithelial tissues cover the whole surface of the body
 It is made up of cells closely packed and range in one or more layer.
 This tissues is specialized to form the covering or lining of all internal and external body surface.
 The wpithelial have nerve supply but do not have blood supply, they get the oxygen and nutrients form form deeper tissues by diffusion.

TWO TYPES OF EPITHELIAL TISSUES
1.

2.

Simple epithelium
a) Simple squamous epithelium
b) Simple cuboidal epithelium
c) Simple columnar epithelium
Compound epithelium
a) Stratified squamous epithelium
b) Stratified cuboidal epithelium
c) Stratified columnar epithelium
d) Transitional epithelium

SIMPLE SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM
The structure of the squamous epithelium is a single layer of flat cells.
 In the center of the cell, there is a single spherical nucleus.  Have basement membrane(basal lamina).
 They are found in Lung Alveoli and Blood Capillaries.

SIMPLE CUBOIDAL EPITHELIUM
The structure of the cuboidal epithelium is a single layer of cube-like cells.
 They have large single spherical and central nucleus.
 Have basement membrane.
 They are found in Thyroid Gland and Surface of
Ovaries.

SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM
The structure of the simple columnar epithelium is a unilayer of column-like cells which are taller than others.
 They have single spherical nucleus.
 Have basement membrane.
 They are found in The lining of the Digestive Track and Line the

Simple epithelial cells may be squamous, cuboidal, columnar or ciliated. Squamous epithelial cells are very flat, with each nucleus forming a lump in the centre. The word ‘squamous’ means ‘scaly’, referring to the flatness of the cells. They fit jointly, rather like crazy paving. Clearly, such delicate thin cells cannot offer much protection and their chief function is to allow materials to pass through via diffusion and osmosis. Simple squamous epithelium is found in the walls of; lung alveoli, blood capillaries and Bowman’s capsule of nephrons. As their names propose, cubiodal cells are cube-shaped, with spherical nuclei. They often line ducts and tubes and can allow materials to pass through in a similar way to squamous epithelia. They often occur in glandular tissues making secretions, these can be found in; Kidney tubules sweat ducts and glands like the thyroid gland and breast tissues.…

What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue? it never has contact with another cell, it always has a free surface. They contain no blood vessels (avascular) and depend on underlying tissues for needed nutrients and oxygen sources to maintain homeostasis. it is usually very thin for this reason. The cells are tightly packed together. composed almost entirely of cells. apical and basal surfaces…

As mammals our aerobic metabolic system requires oxygen for us to sustain life. The organ that transports oxygen from the environment into the body where it is needed, are the lungs. Oxygen is transported through cellular respiration from the lungs to tissues and organs. Between 2,100 to 2,400 gallons of air is breathed to fuel 2,400 gallons of blood that is pumped into the heart. Respiration is controlled by the medulla oblongata, which deals with the autonomic function of breathing. This characteristic allows one to breathe without having to think about the process but can also be overridden and controlled in certain situations. As a result of respiration, carbon dioxide is produced where it is removed for oxygen to be restored. The purpose…
