a. To Taiwanese and Tibetan people it is thought to provide positive spiritual benefit and also to bring good luck and protect you from evil,in Tibetan traditional medicine they grind the Dzi bead and make a paste which is said to relieve any illness.
b. It is traditionaly made of agate, a quartz like substance made by volcanic lava and they were darkened by plant sugars,and bleaching and white line etching with natron and some parts being left out by using clay,grease or wax.

a. They symbolise power and religious strength in the community. They were worn by the wealthy in life and put in their tombes when they died.
b. The Egyptians used gold,coloured glass(instead of gem stones)each artificial colour had a meaning e.g. the beads around a mummy's neck must be red so the god Isis's need for blood is satisfied,They used Emeralds,Imported Lapiz Lazuli,Imported silver.

They have their lips pierced traditionaly to show a young man has left his mothers house and become a man,they are also linked with speeches and singing, the larger plates are worn by the best speakers and war chiefs.

The neck ring pushes the collarbones at an angle so they grow at an angle and give the apearance that they are longer.

In Ethiopia the Suri men scar themselves when they kill someone from an enemy tribe ,but it is also said to get the young men used to pain and blood, as they have a violent environment.
