Religion guided every aspect of Egyptian life. Egyptian religion was based on polytheism, or the worship of many deities. The Egyptians had as many as 2000 gods and goddesses. According to the Egyptians, their gods and goddesses, often represented as part human and part animal, ruled over specific things such as sunlight, water, crops, etc. The Egyptians also saw death as a transitional stage in the progress to a better life in the next world, as they believed that they could only reach their full “potential” after death.

Gods were not only entities with certain roles - but the gods were also the forces of nature, the elements, and the characteristics of certain powers. Some Egyptian gods were merged with other gods to form a new god.
The ancient religion was divided into State and Household religion. The local or household deities were worshipped in the home. Depending on locale, family, needs and preferences; the average Egyptian would choose the most suitable deities and build a household shrine for them. The state religion is what was practiced by the Pharaoh and the temple priests. The temples built to worship the state Gods were not open to the public.
The Pharaoh and Priest was thought to have direct access to these gods. Priests had to worship and make offerings to the Gods to keep the forces of chaos at bay. In this way they were very important, if things were not going well in Egypt, the public might blame the Pharaoh and priest.
