Ancient Greek Culture In the United States today there are various different types of art, many different religions, and several different thought processes. However, all these things didn't just develope over night. The rise of modern day art, religion, and thought developed in ancient Greece. This explains why ancient Greece was so similar to modern day culture in many ways. Today in the United States we have the right to free speech and the right to express ourselves. We wouldnt have these rights if it werent for the ancient greeks. According to the article "Rise of Western Culture and Philosophy" it all began around the 7th century BC, when philosophers began to question the meaning and nature of life (Rise). The first great philosopher, Socrates, had the goal of teaching others to ask questions and think for themselves. Later the second great philosopher, Plato, Socrates' student, taught people that true reality was in ideas not in material things. So basically he wanted people to be okay with what they have and what they knew, and that you cant buy happiness.
