Ancient Roman Aqueducts
Ancient Rome is celebrated for its numerous advancements in architecture, government, and in the field of engineering. A major advancement made within Roman architecture was the Roman aqueducts. Ancient Roman aqueducts stretched over miles of terrain due in part to the utilization of the arched design. Along with these arched designs the use of an inverted siphon allowed for water to climb uphill. The inverted siphon used the pressure of the water and the gaining momentum due to gravity to climb upwards. There were up to fourteen aqueducts created that stretched close to 265 miles, and supplied the Roman people with around fifty gallons of water daily. With the arched design and inverted siphon the aqueducts were able to supply towns with water

The Roman Empire and Han Dynasty were similar technologically. Both had extensive trade and travel networks as well as water technology. The Romans were able to expand and control their empire because of a large network of well maintained roads; originally designed for a quicker deployment of troops the road network also promoted trade because of the relative safety of travel. Similar to the Romans the Han also had an extensive travel network; however, theirs was one based on the water. The Han used rivers as transport which led to the development of a canal network because, as with the Romans, of the safety of travel. Both of these empires also used water technology to move water without manpower. In Rome aqueducts were used to take advantage of gravity and transport water from far away to farms and cities. In the Han waterwheels took advantage of flowing water to create energy which powered chain pumps that moved water to irrigation ditches.…

The Roman Coliseum is an amazing piece of architectural history and has played a significant role in history as well. Construction began in 72 AD under the rule of the Emperor Vespasian. It was completed in 80 AD in the very center of Rome. It is located east of the Roman forum, was built to hold 50,000 people, and has eighty entrances. It could easily hold a football field. There are many rooms and tunnels below the Coliseum. Some of them housed animals and gladiators, and some rooms also contained many pulleys and hand pulled elevators. The Coliseum had four floors and eighty arch ways for the people to enter. The Coliseum was covered with a massive awning, which was attached by poles at the top of the Coliseum that was known as “Velarium”.…

In 50AD, the Romans were becoming more knowledgable in creating a sufficient water system that they began building aqueducts. The architecture and design, of what is known at the Pont Du Gard aqueduct in Rome, is remarkable. There are many similarities and differences between Pont Du Gard and the water system in my hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. Both water systems are functional in their own structural design. They each have a certain function for their own society at the time which make them unique.…

Rome is a city in Italy that has always been a source of great innovation and incredible advances in areas of technology and engineering. A city that originated from such humble beginnings soon was able to transform itself into one of the most powerful empires in the world (Dunstan 2010). This transformation can be attributed mainly to Rome’s incredible ability to develop and implement many ideas that allowed the city to flourish (Dunstan 2010). These ideas included but were not limited to drainage systems, mills, and land elevations (Mahdavi 2012). Utilizing these and other advances in technology and engineering allowed Rome to become a more habitable place, and the incredible empire that Ancient Rome was.…

Rome also built such many triumphal arches that can be seen throughout Italy (ancient.eu, nd). The most impressive one that we all known is the Pantheon, a huge achievement in architectural design that can be made possible by these wonderful Roman inventions. In normal life, arches were used everywhere in road and passageway construction. Also, large insulae was only made possible when concrete was found, and it, in turn, put the first block on modern apartment models (bbc.com,…

The inverted siphon is a “U” shaped channel that water would flow up through due to the water level. Romans would also dig shafts, named purei, that every 230 feet to access to the underground portions of the aqueducts. Cranes would be used to lower the stones into place. Romans often used scaffolding would to hold up the arches while they were being constructed. Arches provided maximum support for the aqueducts.…

Another factor of the Roman Golden Age was their art and architecture. Roman art portrayed an incredibly realistic style of art, even though they favored the style of the Greeks form of art. Their architecture consisted of elaborate columns, arches, domes which can be found at sites like the Pantheon and Coliseum. The Romans also built roads, harbors, bridges, and an early form of elevators. They were also well known for the building of the aqueduct, which were bridge like structures that were used to carry fresh water across long distances. Roads, harbors, and bridges were used for transportation and trade of goods. Vertical shafts contained lifts operated by ropes and pulleys which led people towards the Coliseum. All these engineering and public structures were definitely important and useful to the people of the Roman Empire for trade, transportation, water, and just for an easier way of life.…

The major materials used were plain dirt, gravel, and pavement each used based on the type of road the Romans were building. For example, a private road where people often rarely travelled would be primarily made up of dirt while military roads got the best materials since they would be used most often. Most of the constructional knowledge the Romans had achieved during their time was expanded from the Etruscans. The road construction in Rome can almost be viewed as an art where each piece was laid with a significant purpose and amount of detail to the overall project itself. Remarkably many of the ancient structures along the Roman roads such as bridges and archways are still in use today symbolizing one of Rome’s greatest accomplishment in building these roads to truly last (Andrews, 2014).…

Ancient Rome is recognized as being the forefront of technological innovations and efficiency improvement. The Pont du Gard aqueduct is no less than an impressive engineering feat, stretching for miles to deliver water to town centers. Roman architectural features, such as arches and domes, still remain a prominent presence in modern architecture, proving just how timeless, and more importantly, functional these inventions are. However, one notable difference between the two societies is that unlike Ancient Rome's approach to technological adoption through the appropriation of foreign territories, the United States gained its technological edge through development and research. From the invention of electricity and automobiles to computers,…
