Ancient Rome: The Virtue Of Honor

Calvin Coolidge once said, “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.” Honor is highly regarded, but some people believe that taking their own lives, instead of dishonoring their family, is a better option. In ancient Rome, it was considered honorable for a person to take his/her own life than bring dishonor to one’s family. What is honor, what is considered honorable, and what else can a person do instead of taking his/her life for honor are all questions that will be answered. Honor means that the person has a high self-esteem or high respect. It means that the person will endure anything if they put their mind to it. Nothing phases that person, they know what needs to be done, good or bad. It means that they strive to be a better person for themselves and others. They do what is best in the situation
This ritual was considered honorable because it meant that the person signified their religious beliefs. Through this, the person and their family were then considered honorable once more. Even if a person becomes a slave, the capturers think that they have control over that person, by stripping all of their rights away. The person has the right to take one’s life, but they have to make choices throughout life without emotion. Although ancient Romans sacrificed their lives to express their honor, there are numerous examples of declaring dignity. Honor is defined as high respect and having pride towards something worth credited. For example, if someone encounters a person of higher rank, it’s considered honorable to thank them for their time and service. On the other hand, people are able to express their honor by thanking those who’ve encouraged and boosted his/her confidence throughout their life.
